On Thursday, due to recent injuries in the secondary, the San Francisco 49ers worked out free agent safety Tashaun Gipson, per NFL Communications.

Gipson, 32, has spent 10 years in the NFL. He spent the 2021 season with the Chicago Bears, recording 47 tackles, two interceptions, and three passes defended.

Gipson's workout comes after head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated the team would add a player in the secondary following the injuries to Jimmie Ward (hamstring) and Dontae Johnson (rib cartilage fracture).

"We have [S] George [Odum], who's done a good job. We probably will have to add some more people there, especially with [CB] Dontae [Johnson], because Dontae has done a real good job also. But he might be out this week too with his rib cartilage, so we'll see how it goes with the roster. We might move our nickels around a little bit just for some guys, but hopefully we'll get some more guys in here soon."

Gipson could be a quick addition to the rotation, similar to newly-signed corner Ken Crawley, as the 10-year veteran has been a full-time starter for the past nine seasons, and has even recorded an interception in every season.

The 49ers face off against the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday and could need the extra depth at safety for their final preseason game against the Texans on August 25th, which will be their third game in just 12 days.
