49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan says WR Deebo Samuel understands his role for 2022 season

Jul 30, 2022 at 10:30 AM--

Is Deebo Samuel's future role with the 49ers playing any part in the state of his contract negotiations with the team? Based on comments from head coach Kyle Shanahan, that doesn't seem to be the case.

Shanahan was asked in his pre-practice press conference on Saturday if Samuel's role in 2022 needed to be spelled out in order for contract negotiations to move forward. Shanahan responded by suggesting that he and Samuel have an understanding on that front and that everything is positive between him and the standout wide receiver outside of where things stand with his contract.

"Deebo and I talk a lot," Shanahan said before Saturday's practice. "We're good, and we understand our role. I know there's a lot of noise for five months and tweets and a lot of people are repeating what someone said, repeating and repeating and repeating. There's a lot of negotiations going on. There's a lot of money involved. It's a big business deal. But besides everything else, we're good."

The 49ers and Samuel are coming off a long offseason of reports, rumors and hearsay regarding his contract after he stated his desire to be traded from the team back in the spring. A popular topic of conversation during that time was whether or not Samuel had any problems with being frequently used as a running back like the 49ers did with him over the second half of the 2021 season and if he was looking for assurances the team wouldn't do the same in the future. Samuel is currently with the 49ers as his contract negotiations continue but has been working off to the side instead of participating in team drills.

"I haven't seen any of it, just because I'm working at the time," Shanahan said on Friday. "I know conditioning is the most important part, but I'm sure he is catching balls."

Samuel, 26, is in his fourth season with the 49ers and is in the final year of his rookie contract. Samuel is coming off an All-Pro season that saw him catch 77 passes for 1,405 yards and six touchdowns with 59 carries for 365 yards and eight touchdowns.

By David Bonilla

George Kittle caught just four passes for 28 yards during his 2022 season debut on Sunday night against the Denver Broncos. The San Francisco 49ers tight end is returning from a groin injury that forced him to miss Weeks 1 and 2. He wasn't much of a factor in the 11-10 loss to Denver, though. Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters via a Monday conference call and asked if Kittle is still working his way back into game shape. "Yeah, definitely," Shanahan responded. "You can't underestimate how much, when guys miss time, how hard it is to go out and play a game like that. So yeah, George, he did some good things, but he's not there yet because he hasn't been playing much. It was nice to get him back in practice more last week. It was nice to get him through

There's a lot to unpack from Monday night's 49ers' win over the Los Angeles Rams, which was filled with big plays and one particularly bizarre moment that came from a fan that jumped on the field. The 49ers got a big performance from their defense, who produced seven sacks and two takeaways while keeping the Rams out of the end zone in a 24-9 victory. Meanwhile, the offense took some steps forward with the help of a highlight moment from Deebo Samuel after an ugly performance in last week's 11-10 loss to the Denver Broncos. And along the way, a fan who appeared to be making a protest while covered in pink smoke ran across the field before getting decked by Rams linebacker Bobby Wagner. What did the 49ers think about Samuel's touchdown, and Wagner's hit? And how

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan explains decision to play Deommodore Lenoir vs. Broncos over Samuel Womack

After an impressive preseason, cornerback Samuel Womack played just two defensive snaps on Sunday night against the Denver Broncos. They weren't at slot cornerback, though. Instead, the San Francisco 49ers opted to go with second-year cornerback Deommodore Lenoir at that position, where he played 35 defensive snaps. During a conference call on Monday, head coach Kyle Shanahan explained that decision. "We just liked how he's been looking," Shanahan said. "We were trying to put the best people out there that we think gives us the best chance to win, and just from the last few weeks, and watching him practice and everything, we felt that was D-Mo, and I was real happy with how he played too. I thought he was one of the better guys out there last
