The San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo cleared his physical on Tuesday and won't be placed on the physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list, per NFL insider Ian Rapoport.
After his physical today, #49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo won't be placed on the PUP list.
This eliminates Garoppolo's $7.5 million injury guarantee, leaving no guaranteed money on his contract unless he is on the 49ers' Week 1 roster. That is unlikely to happen, though.
The quarterback underwent shoulder surgery on March 8 and just recently started throwing again. Most expect him to be traded before the start of the 2022 season.
"We don't plan on practicing him with the team," head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Tuesday.
The 49ers kick off training camp this week, and the team has given Garoppolo and his agents permission to seek a trade. San Francisco had hoped to trade the veteran quarterback in March, but the surgery halted talks with other teams. The 49ers are moving forward with last year's No. 3 overall pick, Trey Lance, at quarterback.
The New England Patriots traded Garoppolo to the 49ers in 2017. He owns a 31-14 regular-season record as San Francisco's starting quarterback.
Garoppolo, 30, completed 68.3 percent of his passes for 3,810 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions last season. He has thrown for 11,852 yards, 71 touchdowns, and 38 interceptions in his eight NFL seasons.
