Why Louis Riddick ‘wouldn’t bet against’ 49ers QB Trey Lance having an MVP-type season

Louis Riddick has high expectations for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance. The ESPN analyst has been high on the former North Dakota State star for a while now, saying before last year's draft that he expects Lance to have an "All-Pro, legendary type of career." Riddick also saw the 49ers as a good fit for the young quarterback.

A year later, with Lance headed toward his first NFL season as a starter with those Niners, nothing has changed. Riddick would put his money on Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes to win MVP during the upcoming season. However, he can understand why more money has been bet on Lance to win the annual honor than Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers combined.

"I loved Trey Lance," Riddick said on ESPN. "I got a chance to go up there to his pro day at North Dakota State and meet him, talk to him, watch him throw. I thought, coming out in the draft a few years ago, that Atlanta's offense, run by Arthur Smith, or this offense that's he's in now, run by Kyle Shanahan, were the two best fits for this young man because of the fact that it looks exactly like what he ran at North Dakota State.

"If he can clean up his decision-making and his accuracy, the kind of things that Kyle would be able to do to scheme people open with the use of the play-action pass ... he will be the best dual-threat quarterback in the NFL. He will be because he's 6-4, 220 pounds, and he can throw the ball a mile, and he can throw it with accuracy, and he can make all the throws that you need him to make, especially in the context of an offense that he's familiar with."

How soon can Lance meet Riddick's expectations? After all, the 49ers quarterback started just two games during his rookie season, only threw 71 pass attempts, and had limited collegiate experience.

"Well, Patrick Mahomes did it in his first full year as a starter," Riddick responded. "I think Trey Lance can do the same type of thing. When Patrick came out of Texas Tech, remember, people weren't thinking Patrick was going to be Patrick. No one right now really thinks Trey Lance is going to be the Trey Lance that could be MVP-worthy.

"I wouldn't bet against it, especially with that coaching staff, that system, and how familiar he is with it based off the kind of things he did at North Dakota State. I would not bet against it. Although, I'm not putting my money there."

"Thank God for Mr. Irrelevant": John Lynch reflects on 49ers drafting Trey Lance

By David Bonilla
Apr 22

The decision to trade up in the 2021 NFL Draft and select quarterback Trey Lance could have had significant consequences for general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan. With the team lacking first-round picks in the last two drafts due to this move, and Lance no longer on the roster after being traded to the Dallas Cowboys before last season, it's clear the gamble didn't unfold as expected. Lynch held his annual pre-draft press conference on Monday, reflecting on the decision to take such a big chance on Lance. While such a bold move might have jeopardized jobs elsewhere, Lynch and Shanahan were blessed with some good fortune in the 2022 NFL Draft. Acknowledging the support of the team's ownership, Lynch stated, "They believe in Kyle and I, and our

Why one analyst is worried for Brock Purdy if 49ers trade Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
Apr 18

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy achieved a remarkable feat in 2023, setting a single-season franchise record with 4,280 passing yards. This accomplishment is noteworthy, considering the illustrious quarterbacks who have graced the organization's history. A significant portion of those yards came from wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who amassed a career-high and team-leading 1,342 receiving yards. Most of his 75 catches originated from passes thrown by Purdy. Amidst significant offseason chatter surrounding the 49ers' star receiver, including several unsubstantiated trade rumors, Aiyuk's future remains uncertain. Former NFL player James Jones, now an analyst, expressed concern for Purdy should Aiyuk's tenure in the Bay Area come to an end. "I

5 reasons why 49ers QB Brock Purdy will be better in 2024

By Marc Adams
Apr 20

The San Francisco 49ers appear to have found their quarterback. It was a bumpy road on the journey to locate him, too. There was the up-and-down tenure of Jimmy Garoppolo, whose relationship with Head Coach Kyle Shanahan seemed dysfunctional, at times. Then there was the short-lived Trey Lance experiment. Garoppolo and Lance are no longer being with the team, and one major reason is the emergence of Brock Purdy as the team's QB. Purdy finished his second season with a trip to the Super Bowl, after having a Pro Bowl season in which he finished with 4,280 yards and 31 touchdowns. He also led the league in multiple statistics, including passer rating (113.0) and QBR (72.8). Additionally, Purdy finished fourth in NFL MVP voting. But a year ago, no one knew what to

Why Ian Rapoport believes Brandon Aiyuk might stay with 49ers

By David Bonilla
Apr 23

Brandon Aiyuk has been clear about his desire to receive fair compensation from the San Francisco 49ers—or any NFL team, for that matter. "I'm trying to get what I deserve," Aiyuk said last month on a podcast. "I feel like this season, this season playing football, I figured out who I was as a person and a player — what I bring to the table, what I bring to the locker room, what I bring to the organization." General manager John Lynch affirms that the 49ers aim to keep Aiyuk around, enduring he remains with the team for the remainder of his career. However, a recent report states there's
