49ers GM John Lynch describes Alex Mack situation as ‘fluid’

Apr 29, 2022 at 9:44 PM--

Maybe the San Francisco 49ers should start considering a backup plan at center. Retirement remains a possibility for their veteran center, Alex Mack. The team would like to see him return for his 14th NFL season, and second with the 49ers, but each time they speak on the topic, team decision-makers sound less and less optimistic that will happen.

On Friday night, general manager John Lynch revealed that Mack has not yet arrived at a final decision on his immediate future.

"We've been in contact with Alex and had another discussion with him in the last couple of days," Lynch told reporters. "I will still describe that as fluid. We've collected all the information we needed to collect coming into this draft."

Could that mean the 49ers seek to add a center on Saturday? San Francisco has not selected an offensive lineman yet. Instead, they used their first three draft picks on a pass rusher, running back, and wide receiver. However, the team does currently have six selections remaining.

The 49ers signed Mack to a three-year deal on March 18, 2021. The seven-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman is 36 years old.

Kyle Shanahan: 49ers comfortable with O-line situation, center battle

By David Bonilla

The odds of the San Francisco 49ers signing a veteran center like J.C. Tretter appear to be dwindling. Barring any injuries, the team seems content heading into the 2022 season with the players on the current roster who are competing for roles along the offensive line's interior. "We're very good with the people in our building," head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Friday. "When you talk about a veteran, which everyone does, that just means it's always a lot easier when you've seen someone do it for 17 games. But no one does do that until you give them the opportunity. We see in practice every day now—we saw it last year—that we have guys in our building who are definitely capable of it. Now it's about getting into those games. We'll try to give them some

Kyle Shanahan: Jimmy Garoppolo working toward next situation, 49ers not limiting him

Wednesday was an interesting sight at San Francisco 49ers practice. While you might think all of the attention would be on the field with the team practicing, many fans were interested in one player who has not been practicing—Jimmy Garoppolo. The quarterback was even seen interacting with teammates and fans. That shows you what Garoppolo has meant to the 49ers and the fanbase over the years. The Garoppolo chapter is nearing an end. Second-year quarterback Trey Lance has taken over as the team's starting quarterback. San Francisco has been trying to trade Garoppolo all offseason. Of course, the veteran undergoing shoulder surgery on March 8 complicated things, ending trade talks at the time. As the 49ers await a trade situation to develop, Garoppolo remains

John Lynch: Trey Lance 'really just asserted himself' this offseason, seizing 49ers' starting job

By David Bonilla

Trey Lance spent last season as the backup quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, sitting and learning behind veteran Jimmy Garoppolo. However, things are different this year. Lance has taken the reins from Garoppolo as the team's starting quarterback. While there was media speculation that Garoppolo might eventually work his way into a quarterback competition, for the 49ers, Lance has been the guy for a while now. "We got into the offseason, and the thought really was this is going to become Trey's team," general manager John Lynch recently told The Athletic. "We go through OTAs and all of that, and he really just asserted himself. Those decisions are Kyle's. We obviously
