Maybe the San Francisco 49ers should start considering a backup plan at center. Retirement remains a possibility for their veteran center, Alex Mack. The team would like to see him return for his 14th NFL season, and second with the 49ers, but each time they speak on the topic, team decision-makers sound less and less optimistic that will happen.

On Friday night, general manager John Lynch revealed that Mack has not yet arrived at a final decision on his immediate future.

"We've been in contact with Alex and had another discussion with him in the last couple of days," Lynch told reporters. "I will still describe that as fluid. We've collected all the information we needed to collect coming into this draft."

Could that mean the 49ers seek to add a center on Saturday? San Francisco has not selected an offensive lineman yet. Instead, they used their first three draft picks on a pass rusher, running back, and wide receiver. However, the team does currently have six selections remaining.

The 49ers signed Mack to a three-year deal on March 18, 2021. The seven-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman is 36 years old.

By David Bonilla
Sep 29

On Thursday, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that wide receivers Deebo Samuel and Jauan Jennings would be questionable for Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals. Neither has practiced this week. Samuel is dealing with rib and knee injuries, while Jennings is working through a shin injury. Another receiver, Brandon Aiyuk, did not play against the New York Giants last week. He has been limited during practices this week as he recovers from a shoulder injury. The 49ers have one more practice before Sunday's game at Levi's Stadium, a Friday afternoon session that is typically the lightest of the week. However, it may be crucial in determining the

John Lynch on 49ers contract extension: "I've got a ton of gratitude for the York family"

By David Bonilla

It is believed that general manager John Lynch's contract extension keeps him with the San Francisco 49ers through the 2027 season. The deal was actually done ahead of the start of the season but wasn't announced until the day after the team's Week 3 win over the New York Giants. Lynch was in Texas, where he and his family were spending time with his daughter, a student at TCU. That's when people started congratulating the 49ers general manager on his extension. That surprised him since the actual signing took place weeks earlier. Still, Lynch is grateful for the expression of confidence by 49ers management. "I think [head coach] Kyle [Shanahan], yesterday, I heard him use the term 'grateful,'" Lynch said Friday morning on KNBR's "Murph and Mac"

By David Bonilla

The San Francisco 49ers are 3-0 and sitting atop the NFC West standings. The Arizona Cardinals, the Niners' next opponent, didn't get their first win until this past weekend. However, it was against the Super Bowl-hopeful Dallas Cowboys, and it was one of the biggest upsets of Week 3. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has done his homework on the Cardinals this season. While reviewing the film, he saw a team with a lot of fight, a group that contended in each of its matchups, including the losses. "They're a team that really should be 3-0 right now," Shanahan told reporters this week. Some fans may be overlooking the Cardinals, anticipating the next

49ers WR Deebo Samuel's status appears to be trending up ahead of Week 4

By Rohan Chakravarthi
Sep 30

The San Francisco 49ers announced their weekly practice squad elevations, sharing that wide receiver Willie Snead and cornerback Kendall Sheffield will be called up to the active roster for their Week 4 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. With the announcement that Snead would be called up, one may assume that 49ers wideout Deebo Samuel's status would be trending down, as the 49ers expect to add another wideout to the active roster for Week 4. However, it's actually the opposite. Looking at the injury report, the 49ers aren't at risk of just missing Samuel, but
