The San Francisco 49ers opened the 2021 preseason on Saturday night by hosting the Kansas City Chiefs at Levi's Stadium. Today, Pro Football Focus released its grades from the game. So who played well and who has a lot more work to do?

It is important to note that many of the starters weren't in the game very long. For example, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo played just eight snaps on Saturday night, earning a 64.3 overall grade. A small sample size may not be entirely fair to use while judging the players' performance.

Tight end Joshua Perkins was the highest-graded player (95.5) in the game but only played nine snaps. San Francisco's highest-graded defensive player was defensive end Arden Key, who earned an 88.2 overall grade.

Rookie quarterback Trey Lance was among the lowest-graded offensive players. That may be surprising to some, considering he was part of the most exciting play of the game—an 80-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Trent Sherfield. However, Lance finished the game just 5-of-14 for 128 yards while taking four sacks.

"I obviously left a lot of big plays out there," Lance said after the game. "Wish I would've, you know, taken advantage of the opportunities that were given a few times, especially at the end of the half and starting that first drive of the second half."

Below are Pro Football Focus' five highest-graded 49ers players on offense against the Chiefs.

  • Joshua Perkins, TE, 95.5, 9 snaps
  • Trent Sherfield, WR, 92.5, 9 snaps
  • Colton McKivitz, LG, 91.8, 49 snaps
  • Dakoda Shepley, C, 82.9, 36 snaps
  • Deebo Samuel, WR, 74.5, 8 snaps

Below are the five highest-graded 49ers players on defense.

  • Arden Key, DE, 88.2, 18 snaps
  • Eddie Yarbrough, DE, 85.0, 35 snaps
  • Elijah Sullivan, LB, 81.1, 24 snaps
  • Deommodore Lenoir, CB, 79.6, 48 snaps
  • Jared Mayden, SS, 78.6, 59 snaps

Below are the three lowest-graded 49ers players on offense.

  • Aaron Banks, RG, 29.8, 28 snaps
  • Richie James Jr., WR, 44.6, 22 snaps
  • Trey Lance, QB, 48.8, 29 snaps

Below are the three lowest-graded 49ers players on defense.

"Thank God for Mr. Irrelevant": John Lynch reflects on 49ers drafting Trey Lance

By David Bonilla
Apr 22

The decision to trade up in the 2021 NFL Draft and select quarterback Trey Lance could have had significant consequences for general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan. With the team lacking first-round picks in the last two drafts due to this move, and Lance no longer on the roster after being traded to the Dallas Cowboys before last season, it's clear the gamble didn't unfold as expected. Lynch held his annual pre-draft press conference on Monday, reflecting on the decision to take such a big chance on Lance. While such a bold move might have jeopardized jobs elsewhere, Lynch and Shanahan were blessed with some good fortune in the 2022 NFL Draft. Acknowledging the support of the team's ownership, Lynch stated, "They believe in Kyle and I, and our

Where the 49ers landed in PFF's latest power ranking

By David Bonilla
Apr 22

While it would be foolish to declare that the San Francisco 49ers lack any deficiencies, the team remains one of the most talented rosters in the NFL. That alone is enough to place them high on media power rankings. The truth is, power rankings mean very little at this stage in the offseason. Yes, free agency has come and gone, but NFL rosters are about to undergo further changes this week, with the 2024 NFL Draft slated for Thursday. Pro Football Focus' Amelia Probst posted a power ranking based on the analytics site's data on each roster and the offseason roster moves made so far. The San Francisco 49ers came in at No. 2, behind only the Kansas City

PFF high on this cornerback for 49ers in mock draft

By David Bonilla
Apr 15

Analyst Dane Brugler of The Athletic grades former Iowa State cornerback T.J. Tampa as a second or third-round draft pick and ranks him 55th overall on his big board. Pro Football Focus, however, holds a higher opinion of the young defensive back. In his latest mock draft, the site's lead analyst, Sam Monson, has the San Francisco 49ers selecting Tampa with the No. 31 overall pick. "T.J. Tampa fits the prototype of a 49ers cornerback," Monson explains. "He has had consecutive seasons of very impressive play and allowed just 240 yards on 49 targets last season. The team doesn't necessarily need him to make an immediate impact, but they could

7-round mock draft has 49ers adding 2 legacy players

By David Bonilla
Apr 22

Trevor Sikkema of Pro Football Focus unveiled a seven-round mock draft for the San Francisco 49ers, addressing several key needs for the team in the 10-pick projection. Interestingly, the mock draft sees the team adding two legacy players. But before delving into that, let's examine the first three selections. Sikkema has the 49ers shoring up their offensive line at pick No. 31 with the selection of former Arizona offensive tackle Jordan Morgan. Morgan allowed 14 pressures and two sacks in his 477 pass-blocking snaps at left tackle in 2023. He earned an impressive pass-blocking grade of 87.3 and an overall grade of
