The 49ers' depth at the position has taken a hit. Today, head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that Jaquiski Tartt is not expected to return to the football field "anytime soon" as the safety continues dealing with the toe injury he suffered last season. Tartt is currently on the active/physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list.
"I don't know how long he's going to stay on PUP, but I don't see him coming back anytime soon right now," Shanahan said.
San Francisco is also without safety Tony Jefferson, who is dealing with a groin/hamstring tweak.
"I'm not sure how long he's going to be out for," Shanahan said of Jefferson. "So definitely planning on getting some other guys in here because our numbers are low there."
The 49ers are in their final week of training camp and are preparing to host the Kansas City Chiefs at Levi's Stadium on Saturday.
