Deebo Samuel made Pro Football Focus' ranking of the NFL's top 32 wide receivers — barely. The San Francisco 49ers wideout comes in at No. 31.

Samuel is entering his third NFL season. The Niners made him a second-round draft pick out of South Carolina in 2019. Samuel racked up 57 receptions for 802 yards and three touchdowns while adding 159 rushing yards and three more scores on the ground during his impressive rookie campaign.

Injuries forced the 25-year-old receiver's production to go down last season. Samuel was slow to return after suffering a Jones fracture during the offseason and then fought through a hamstring injury during the season.

"Injuries got in the way of a big sophomore breakout from Samuel, but when healthy, he was exactly what we expected: an after-the-catch phenom," wrote Anthony Treash. "Samuel has produced 9.8 yards after the catch per reception in his two NFL seasons. Not only does that lead all wide receivers, but it leads the group by a substantial margin of 2.5 yards.

"He has also broken 28 total tackles in regular-season play over that span, tying for the fifth-most at the position. He played only six games in 2020, so that's pretty damn impressive."

Not being out on the football field with his teammates was devastating for Samuel. Hopefully, he will fare better in 2021.

"I never got down mentally like I did after I pulled my hamstring in the last game I had," Samuel said in January. "It took a toll on my body, and it made me realize health is the most important thing and being available."

Samuel blamed the hamstring issues on overcompensating for the offseason foot injury. The receiver missed three games in November due to the hamstring. Then he missed the final three games of the season after reaggravating the issue.

"Just compensating on one side caused other things to happen, which is how I pulled my hamstring twice this year," Samuel said. "It was a rough year for me."

Samuel finished his 2020 campaign with 33 catches for 391 yards and one touchdown.

ESPN analyst on Brandon Aiyuk: 49ers shouldn't pay two receivers top dollar

By David Bonilla
Apr 9

ESPN analyst Matt Miller understands the perspective of San Francisco 49ers fans. After all, he has been a fan of the team since he was a kid. Seeing any of your favorite players leave and put on another uniform is tough. It's also difficult to pay everyone, and Miller knows that. It's not a formula for successful roster building, including paying two wide receivers top dollar. The 49ers are trying to negotiate a contract extension with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. The team invested heavily in another receiver, Deebo Samuel, just two years ago. Is allowing each of them to consume a significant chunk of the salary cap feasible for a team that hopes to continue being competitive and win Super Bowls? "I have to separate the fan part of my brain, who

Deebo Samuel and Brock Purdy are why the 49ers can afford to pay Brandon Aiyuk

It's evident that the San Francisco 49ers engaged in long-term financial planning. Much discussion has centered around the feasibility of the team committing significant financial resources to two wide receivers, Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel. Some skeptics question the wisdom of such heavy investment in a single position, especially considering that the 49ers handed Samuel a substantial three-year extension merely two years ago. Adding complexity to this debate is the impending contract extension for quarterback Brock Purdy, positioning him to become the highest-paid player on the team. He will likely even become one of the NFL's highest-paid players. Where he ranks in average salary will depend upon whether he can replicate the stellar performance of his Pro Bowl 2023

Mike Silver on how Deebo Samuel's contract might be the starting point for a Brandon Aiyuk extension

By Al Sacco

With the 2024 NFL Draft less than a week away, it's common for the rumor mill to start churning, especially with players who are actively seeking a new contract. It was just two short years ago that WR Deebo Samuel requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers prior to draft day, only for cooler heads to prevail and eventually agree to a new deal. Now, it's WR Brandon Aiyuk's turn to try and get paid and rumors surfaced over the weekend that he too would request to be dealt. While that report was quickly shot down by his agent, there's still a lot of discussion about Aiyuk's future and if other teams will come calling on draft night. Legendary columnist Mike Silver joined

PFF mock draft has 49ers adding cornerback with 'unique fluidity and size'

By David Bonilla
Apr 10

Analyst Steve Palazzolo unveiled a first-round mock draft for Pro Football Focus, attempting to forecast the selections for each NFL team within the top 32 picks. While the San Francisco 49ers concentrated on strengthening the defensive line in free agency, Palazzolo envisions the team continuing to fortify that side of the ball. In his mock draft, Palazzolo predicts that the 49ers will select former Iowa State cornerback T.J. Tampa with the No. 31 overall pick. "Tampa's unique fluidity and size for a cornerback make him worthy of a top-75 pick," reads the analysis from Pro Football Focus' big board. "If he can clean up his footwork, he can
