There has been significant speculation that the San Francisco 49ers could pursue a veteran pass rusher ahead of the 2026 season, with defensive end Joey Bosa often mentioned as a potential option.
A reunion with the 49ers would create a major storyline, as Joey's younger brother, Nick Bosa, has anchored San Francisco's defense since being selected No. 2 overall in the 2019 NFL Draft.
However, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter recently cast doubt on the possibility of a Bosa brothers reunion in Santa Clara, suggesting the elder veteran pass rusher may be leaning toward retirement.
"People have brought this up because Nick Bosa is out there, and it would always be fantastic to see Nick and Joey Bosa playing together," Schefter said on his podcast.
Schefter noted that while Bosa remains a free agent, his long NFL career and financial security could make retirement a realistic option.
"It is more likely than not that Joey Bosa has played his last NFL down," Schefter continued. "Now again, could a situation like the 49ers come along that entices him enough to come out and play again? Yeah, absolutely. We saw it happen last year with Philip Rivers. So you never know when a player is fully done and when he's not done."
Although Bosa has recorded just five sacks in each of the last two seasons and has not reached double-digit sacks since 2021, he still showed flashes of impact ability with the Buffalo Bills last season, including tallying five forced fumbles.
At this stage of his career, Bosa may ultimately be weighing whether continuing into 2026 with a third NFL team is worth it.
"But the fact of the matter is, I think if the Niners wanted to pair those two together, it probably would have happened already," Schefter said. "I think if Joey Bosa wanted to play football, it probably would have happened already.
"And I think he's perfectly content to sit on the sideline, with all the money he's made, and not have to go to training camp, not have to put himself into a situation that he doesn't want to be in, and be highly selective to choose an opportunity to play again—and that's even if he does that, which I would guess there's a real chance he doesn't."
In May, head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked about the possibility of bringing Bosa to the 49ers.
"I look at our team as kind of we have our team, and anyone else that we can figure out to bring, especially someone like that, that would be awesome," Shanahan said. "But that stuff's not always possible."
Meanwhile, Nick Bosa believes his brother may have other priorities right now.
"I think he's working on his golf game right now," he said. "So, I don't think he's thinking too much about football."
