49ers’ Kyle Shanahan respects Chris Simms’ analysis but tells his friend nothing

Mar 29, 2021 at 2:53 PM--

NBC Sports analyst Chris Simms seems convinced that the San Francisco 49ers traded up to the No. 3 spot to select quarterback Mac Jones. Of course, as is the case with many analysts, that is just an educated guess. However, it held more weight and created some chatter because of Simms' relationship with 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. The two are close friends.

Simms has admitted that he doesn't have any real insight into Shanahan's thinking regarding this year's draft. He knows how the coach has looked at the quarterback position in the past, which led Simms to his conclusion about Jones.

"I think it's Mac Jones. I do," Simms said on PFT Live today. "I don't know that, but just knowing my friend, knowing his history, knowing his school of thought to make that type of move, that's the one that makes sense to me. ... I think he makes sense to him, one, because, I think, after Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson ... he's the most NFL ready right now."

Today, Shanahan sat down with general manager John Lynch and discussed his friend, Simms. He explained why analysts might not want to put as much stock into what Simms says.

"Trust me, Chris talks about everything," Shanahan said. "Therefore, I haven't been able to talk to him in a couple of years. Anyone who you're friends with who speaks in the media, and people think you're friends with them, that means you're not allowed to tell them anything. That's why he doesn't even ask me stuff. Because if he does ask me something, and I tell him, then he can't say it.

"But Chris does a good job with that stuff, and I respect listening to him. That's why I always do listen to his opinions, because he's not a guy that just calls people to get his opinions. Chris works at it. That's why he wanted to be a coach for a little bit, spending a year in New England and stuff. He didn't like the hours. I understand.

"But he loves watching quarterbacks and doing that stuff, so I always love to hear his evaluations."

It is worth noting that Simms claimed to know about Shanahan's love of wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk leading to last year's draft but did his best not to tip his friend's hand.

By David Bonilla

Everyone awaits a resolution to the Deebo Samuel drama that has captivated the media this offseason. The San Francisco 49ers' star receiver is due a contract extension but requested to be traded in April after nothing seemed imminent. It seems that remains the case. General manager John Lynch told reporters that nothing is imminent as the 49ers report to training camp this week. However, he hopes to have some exciting news soon because the two sides have had good discussions. "We've had really productive and substantive talks," Lynch said on Tuesday. "I don't want to get everyone all excited that something is imminent because we're not there yet. But we're really hopeful that, in the near future, we'll be able to announce something that's exciting for everyone

Why Kyle Shanahan is 'pumped' about his 49ers roster featuring inexperienced Trey Lance at QB

By David Bonilla

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is excited about returning to football. The team starts training camp this week, and Shanahan believes he has a highly-competitive roster—maybe even his best as a head coach. "It's about as good of a roster as I've [had]," Shanahan told reporters on Tuesday. "I love our team right now. When I just sit and go through our positions, some of the young guys that we've added, some of the young guys in the last couple of years who have quickly become some of our better players and leaders, I think our team's in a great spot to turn it over to a quarterback who hasn't played before." That quarterback is last year's No. 3 overall pick, Trey Lance, who will take over as the team's starting quarterback. Of course, he has

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan says WR Deebo Samuel understands his role for 2022 season

By Kirk Larrabee
Jul 30

Is Deebo Samuel's future role with the 49ers playing any part in the state of his contract negotiations with the team? Based on comments from head coach Kyle Shanahan, that doesn't seem to be the case. Shanahan was asked in his pre-practice press conference on Saturday if Samuel's role in 2022 needed to be spelled out in order for contract negotiations to move forward. Shanahan responded by suggesting that he and Samuel have an understanding on that front and that everything is positive between him and the standout wide receiver outside of where things stand with his contract. "Deebo and I talk a lot," Shanahan said before Saturday's practice. "We're good, and we understand our role. I know there's a lot of noise for five months and tweets and a lot of people are

49ers' Kyle Shanahan assesses how far Trey Lance has come—and what he still needs to show during camp

By Kirk Larrabee

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan made it clear on Tuesday that the organization is all in on Trey Lance as the quarterback this season, declaring to reporters during his pre-training camp media session that this year's team was "Trey's team." But it took some time for Shanahan to reach that level of confidence in Lance, and there are still some questions about his new starting quarterback that Shanahan hopes to find answers to in the weeks and months ahead. The 22-year-old Lance came to the 49ers as a talented but raw prospect out of North Dakota State, where he played just one full season as a starter (NDSU's 2019 national championship season) before being limited to
