Washington hiring Martin Mayhew as GM, 49ers to receive extra comp draft pick

Jan 21, 2021 at 4:47 PM--

All signs pointed to Marty Hurney becoming the new general manager of the Washington Football Team. Reports had San Francisco 49ers VP of player personnel Martin Mayhew joining him as a "high-ranking executive with a title to be determined." Instead, ESPN's John Keim is reporting that Mayhew will have the title of general manager.

What will Hurney's title be? He is actually the one who will have a high-ranking role within Washington's front office, not Mayhew.

That means general manager John Lynch and company will receive another compensatory third-round pick as part of the NFL's minority-hiring program, giving the 49ers an additional selection in each of the next three drafts. San Francisco was already set to receive a third-round pick in each of the next two drafts after the New York Jets hired former 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh as head coach.

Mayhew has general manager experience. He served in the role with the Detroit Lions from 2008-15, and his teams reached the playoffs twice during that span. Mayhew has also served in other executive roles with both the Lions and New York Giants.

Lynch hired Mayhew in 2017 as a senior personal executive and promoted him to VP of player personnel in 2019.

"Martin has played an integral role in helping to establish a sustainable, championship culture over the last four years," Lynch said via a statement issued by the 49ers. "His skills as a talent evaluator and his counsel as a trusted advisor have positively impacted me and the 49ers organization. Personally, Martin has always been a loyal teammate and a tremendous friend to me and my family. We are excited for him to take on this new opportunity at an organization with which he has so much history. On behalf of our entire team, we wish Martin nothing but the best."

The San Francisco 49ers focused on defense in free agency but still have several needs heading into the 2024 NFL Draft. The team did not address the offensive line, and it's a safe bet they will do so with some rookie selections next month. The Niners could also continue bolstering things on the defensive side of the football. Adding to the defensive back, defensive line, or linebacker groups remains possibilities. Pro Football Focus analyst Brad Spielberger released his latest mock draft and doesn't have the 49ers drafting at any of those positions. Instead, he has the team adding a bit of an insurance policy on offense, drafting former Georgia wide receiver

Mia O'Brien, a reporter for Jacksonville radio station 1010XL, was the first to link San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk to the Jacksonville Jaguars last week. A new report from O'Brien sheds light on the asking price for the star wide receiver, who is entering his fifth-year option. According to O'Brien, the 49ers sought the No. 17 overall pick, plus wide receiver Zay Jones, in exchange for Aiyuk. However, it seems this asking price was deemed too high for the Jaguars, who would have had to part ways with these assets and commit significant money to Aiyuk in the form of a contract
