‘I feel fantastic’: George Kittle downplays injury, but 49ers will learn more on Monday

Sep 13, 2020 at 5:42 PM--

San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle headed into the locker room a little earlier than his teammates after suffering what looked to be a knee or leg injury. He was, however, able to return to the game in the second half, but was largely ineffective in the team's 24-20 defeat against the Arizona Cardinals at Levi's Stadium on Sunday.

The tight end was held without a catch after the injury.

"George, he's a warrior," quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo said. "He fights through a lot, a lot of injuries, a lot of little nicks and bumps. But it didn't affect him at all. They were cheating a lot of coverage to him and putting some extra people on him, so it made it a little difficult at times, but I thought he played a hell of a game."

Kittle was asked after the game how his leg feels.

"I feel fantastic. Fantastic," Kittle responded. "Not an issue at all."

Of course, the 49ers star said something similar last season after suffering an injury, coincidentally, against the Cardinals during a Week 9 contest. Like this game, Kittle continued playing in that 2019 road matchup but missed the next two games.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that the team would learn more about the extent of the injury on Monday.

"I'm not exactly sure (about the extent of the injury)," Shanahan said. "I know he went out with a lower leg injury. They don't get into specifics with me. At halftime, he told me he was good to go, so he returned.

"I'm sure we'll find out a little bit more tomorrow morning when he comes in."

Kittle ended the day with four receptions for 44 yards but was not targeted after returning from the injury.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters before Wednesday's practice and provided some good news regarding George Kittle. The All-Pro tight end will return to practice after sustaining an MCL sprain during Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals and missing this past weekend's matchup against the New York Jets. He is, however, expected to be limited. Kittle's status for Sunday's game against the New York Giants will be dependent on how he looks during practices this week. Shanahan also noted that running back Tevin Coleman's knee sprain is more severe than Raheem Mostert's knee injury. While Mostert may miss this weekend's game, he is not expected to miss an extended period. Shanahan says Coleman could miss four weeks, though, and that the

San Francisco 49ers fans got a scare on Sunday when All-Pro tight end George Kittle appeared to suffer a knee or leg injury late in the second quarter of the team's matchup against the Arizona Cardinals at Levi's Stadium. The good news is that Kittle was back on the field during the 49ers' first offensive drive of the second half. Kittle was hit by Cardinals safety Budda Baker after a high pass by quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo bounced off his hands on the 49ers' final drive of the first half. He was able to walk off on his own, went to the sideline, and had his left leg examined by medical staff. The 49ers star exited for the locker room before his teammates and was accompanied by team doctor Tim McAdams. Kittle signed a massive five-year

49ers' George Kittle has sprained MCL and bone bruise but could return for Week 3

By Kirk Larrabee
Sep 20, 2020

The 49ers will be without injured tight end George Kittle against the New York Jets this afternoon but are hopeful he'll be ready to play in time for next week's game against the New York Giants, according to reports from Adam Schefter of ESPN and Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. Both reporters weighed in on Kittle's status earlier this morning while also shedding some light on the nature of his injury, which occurred during the 49ers' Week 1 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Schefter wrote earlier this morning that Kittle has been diagnosed with a sprained MCL in his left knee "that would sideline most players for a few weeks" but is showing
