49ers injury news: D.J. Jones in concussion protocol, Ross Dwelley bothered by foot

Aug 22, 2020 at 12:28 PM--

San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle D.J. Jones' shoulder is fine, and that is undoubtedly good news for the defense. The defender, however, is in the concussion protocol, head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed after Saturday's practice.

"He'll be back sooner than later," Shanahan said.

Jones left practice on Thursday with a shoulder injury after the defender absorbed a goal-line hit. He was replaced by rookie Javon Kinlaw for the remainder of the session.

"We looked at his shoulder," Shanahan said. "It ended up being totally fine or he would have came to practice the next day. But he ended up having a concussion that we found out when we brought him in. We're not exactly sure when it happened, but it was good that we found that out after looking at his shoulder."

Shanahan also provided an update on tight end Ross Dwelley, whose foot was bothering him. That forced the tight end to miss Saturday's practice.

Defensive end Nick Bosa had the day off. It was not injury-related, though. Shanahan called it a "maintenance day."

Rapoport weighs in on John Lynch's comments about Jimmy Garoppolo

By David Bonilla
Nov 16, 2020

Last week, John Lynch offered a vote of confidence in his quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo. But it came after the general manager admitted that the San Francisco 49ers were scouting college quarterbacks. To many, the comments didn't mean much. Lynch says the 49ers always scout quarterbacks each year. One good fit for head coach Kyle Shanahan might be BYU's Zach Wilson. So, of course, VP of player personnel Adam Peters traveling to watch BYU made headlines. "Here's what I know about Jimmy Garoppolo, and I think I've been consistent," Lynch said last week during a KNBR interview. "We're a better football team when he's out there. We win a lot of games when he's out

Kyle Shanahan attempts to explain Arik Armstead's drop in production

By David Bonilla
Nov 19, 2020

Some subscribe to the idea that you shouldn't hand a big payday to a player whose outlier season falls during a contract year. Defensive lineman Arik Armstead's career-best season came last year when he led the San Francisco 49ers with 10 sacks. The production came during his fifth-year option, and the 49ers rewarded the defender this offseason with a five-year, $85 million deal. Armstead had a lot of help along the defensive line last season. He had rookie phenom Nick Bosa and veteran Dee Ford (at times) causing havoc on the edges. He had DeForest Buckner plugging up the middle. It truly was one of the best defensive lines the Niner Faithful had seen in a long while. And
