The San Francisco 49ers may be looking to bring in a familiar face to help offset some of the injuries at center. Weston Richburg is expected to start the season on the physically-unable-to-perform list, which would make Ben Garland the starter. He, however, suffered an ankle injury during Tuesday's practice.
Daniel Brunskill took the remainder of the reps at center, but the 49ers were already looking to add some depth at the position before Garland's injury.
Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports that San Francisco has reached out to former 49ers starting center Daniel Kilgore.
"The two sides weren't close to a deal, although the conversations took place before Garland's injury," wrote Barrows in a recent mailbag. "Per the NFL Network, the team also had former Bears center Hroniss Grasu in for a visit recently.
"If the 49ers are serious about Brunskill competing for the right-guard spot, they might have to sign another center."
Kilgore spent seven seasons with the 49ers before the team traded him in 2018 to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick. The move came right after San Francisco signed Richburg.
Kilgore played the past two seasons with Miami, who in March declined to pick up his option.
The 49ers made Kilgore a fifth-round draft pick out of Appalachian State in 2011. He has appeared in 91 games with 56 starts in his nine NFL seasons.
