‘I really felt bad for the guy’: Kyle Shanahan expects MRI to reveal ACL injury for 49ers WR Jalen Hurd

Aug 17, 2020 at 12:29 PM--

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters after Monday's practice and after NFL Network reported that the team expects an MRI to reveal that wide receiver Jalen Hurd suffered a torn ACL on Sunday.

"We still haven't gotten the result yet," Shanahan said. "I saw that the ACL was reported today. It would be a surprise if it's not. It happened yesterday. He's having the MRI right now, but it's a pretty unfortunate thing for him.

"We know what he went through last year with his back, and the guy's worked as hard as anyone on our team to get back.

"For him to get hurt before he actually got to go out there, just a freak thing on air, cutting. I really felt bad for the guy, but he'll be back next year."

Hurd went down on Sunday while working with a strength coach on a side field. He missed his rookie campaign last season with a back injury and was being eased back into practicing before this latest injury.

The 49ers drafted two wide receivers in April. Shanahan commented that the second, seventh-rounder Jauan Jennings, might be able to fill in for the loss of Hurd.

"Jalen is a little bit different in some aspects, but I think Jauan is a decent comparison," Shanahan said. "He is big, and he definitely has the mentality ... He's got the mindset, he's got the talent, he's got the tenacity to go out there and do it."

NFL Network also reported that the 49ers are bringing in veteran receiver Jaron Brown this week for a workout.

Marcellus Wiley: Kyle Shanahan making Jimmy Garoppolo a scapegoat as 49ers prepare to draft replacement

Everyone is eagerly trying to figure out which quarterback will be selected by the San Francisco 49ers with the No. 3 overall pick. Will it be Justin Fields, Trey Lance, or the less-popular choice of Mac Jones? Whatever the decision, it means the end of Jimmy Garoppolo's time with the Niners is inching closer. The veteran quarterback is expected to remain with the team this season, as head coach Kyle Shanahan and quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello get the incoming rookie up to speed. Marcellus Wiley, a former NFL defensive end, made it known this week that he feels that replacing Garoppolo is a mistake. He believes the quarterback is being made a scapegoat for San Francisco's disappointing six-win campaign in 2020. The Speak for Yourself host went on a rant,

Rapoport: Kyle Shanahan says 49ers are 'definitely considering' Mac Jones but isn't tipping hand

First off, let's make it clear that it would be irresponsible for the San Francisco 49ers to deny anything when it comes to guesswork surrounding their 2021 NFL Draft intentions. Yes, they own the No. 3 overall pick, but that doesn't mean they want everyone to know what they plan to do. Everyone expects quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson to go one and two in the draft ... but it's the NFL Draft. Nothing is a certainty. A national narrative has been created that indicates the favorite to land with San Francisco is former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones. Maybe that will be the case. Maybe not. The team could also select Justin Fields of Ohio State or Trey Lance of North Dakota State. Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch are expected to

Zierlein: Trey Lance is the perfect playmaker for Kyle Shanahan's 49ers

It's been nearly two weeks since NFL Media analyst Lance Zierlein released his last mock draft. In it, he had the San Francisco 49ers selecting Trey Lance of North Dakota State with the No. 3 overall pick instead of Justin Fields of Ohio State or Mac Jones of Alabama. It doesn't sound like his opinion of what head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch should do come April 29 has changed. While Zierlein's colleagues, Steve Wyche and Maurice Jones-Drew, made excellent cases for Fields to be San Francisco's pick, Zierlein stuck with his choice of Lance and defended the decision during a segment on NFL Network. "This is the guy San Francisco should be

Jones-Drew on 49ers' draft: 'Fields is a perfect quarterback for Kyle Shanahan's system'

NFL running back turned analyst Maurice Jones-Drew released his second mock draft and didn't have the San Francisco 49ers selecting Mac Jones, going against the national media narrative that the Alabama quarterback is a near-lock to join Kyle Shanahan in the Bay Area. Jones-Drew sees another prospect as a perfect fit for the 49ers head coach's offense. With Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson expected to be off the draft board by San Francisco's pick at No. 3, Jones-Drew has Shanahan and general manager John Lynch selecting Justin Fields of Ohio State. On Wednesday, the two 49ers decision-makers will head to Columbus, Ohio, to watch the former Buckeye throw
