There may be a battle brewing in the San Francisco 49ers locker room. No, it's not a battle for a roster spot. It's a battle for a jersey number.

Apparently, both Kendrick Bourne and rookie Brandon Aiyuk may be eying the same jersey number for the 2020 season -- you know, whenever and however that begins.

The number they both seem to desire is the one that has been worn the past three years by wide receiver Marquise Goodwin, who on Saturday was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Bourne asked the following via Twitter over the weekend.

On Monday, Aiyuk posted the following on Instagram.

Could they both be gunning for the same number? We'll have to wait and see.

Personally, I like (or have gotten used to) seeing Bourne in No. 84. Although, anything beats seeing him wear No. 6 during his rookie offseason. That just didn't seem fitting for a receiver. Bourne did wear No. 11 in college at Eastern Washington.

H/t to Patrick Tulini and Akash Anavarathan for the find

Former NFL wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh claims to have recently spoken to Brandon Aiyuk, stating that the star player has no desire to leave the San Francisco 49ers. Aiyuk and the 49ers are currently negotiating a contract extension, aiming to finalize a new deal. Of course, that hasn't prevented significant media speculation surrounding Aiyuk's future, with many wondering if the delay might hint at a potential trade. Rapoport: 49ers send clear message to teams inquiring about Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
Apr 16

Ian Rapoport didn't offer much of an update on the ongoing contract negotiations between the San Francisco 49ers and their standout wide receiver, Brandon Aiyuk. However, the NFL insider emphasized one thing: The team is not entertaining trade discussions at this juncture. Reacting to Aiyuk's decision to unfollow the 49ers on Instagram, Rapoport couldn't help but chuckle at the latest development. This practice has become commonplace among players who are unhappy with their contract situations. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel similarly took this action in 2022 before requesting to be traded just before the draft. Things have yet to escalate that far with Aiyuk, but Rapoport sees his

Rumor: Steelers believe they can acquire 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk at a bargain

By David Bonilla
Apr 17

According to Sports Illustrated contributor Noah Strackbein, who writes for "All Steelers" on the network, there's a level of confidence within the Pittsburgh Steelers organization that they can strike a deal for San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk—and at a bargain rate. "According to a team source, the Steelers and 49ers trade talks are real," Strackbein wrote. "While nothing is imminent, they 'would be surprised if it didn't happen.' But it all comes down to compensation, and Pittsburgh isn't willing to budge much on price." While it seems unlikely that the 49ers would part ways with Aiyuk for anything less than a first-round draft
