San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo had surgery on his knee on Wednesday morning to repair the torn ACL he suffered on September 23 against the Kansas City Chiefs. Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters that afternoon but didn't yet have an update on how the surgery went.
While Garoppolo is expected to be ready for the start of the 2019 season, Shanahan didn't have an idea of when his quarterback would be able to get back to work with the 49ers.
"It's way too early," Shanahan said. "When he wakes up, and I talk to the doctors who did it, we'll get some clarity."
General manager John Lynch joined KNBR on Thursday night and provided a better update on Garoppolo's surgery.
"It went well," Lynch said on the "Tolbert & Lund" show. "I did talk to the surgeon today. You always hear from your trainer and your medical people, but I wanted to hear it myself. I got a great report.
"I won't go into details other than -- although, I can tell you I never had a surgeon say, 'It went real bad.' But I have had surgeons concerned after surgery, and that wasn't the case at all. He was very pleased with the way it went. One of those deals again, where it looked better because sometimes you see some things on MRIs you don't know.
"It was a good repair, and they're very optimistic about the prognosis for his future."
