The 49ers dropped another close contest, this time to Washington 26-24 in a back and forth game.

Washington opened the game by scoring 17 straight points before the 49ers benched starting quarterback Brian Hoyer in favor of rookie CJ Beathard, who led the ensuing scoring drive right before the half to cut it to 17-7.

The 49ers came out in the second half and kicked a field goal to make it 17-10, after which former 49er Vernon Davis fumbled and safety Jimmie Ward returned the ball back to the Washington 1-yard line. Carlos Hyde ran the ball into the end zone from there for his second touchdown of the day.

The team seemed to get a spark from Beathard, who was making throws all over the field. He threw his first career touchdown pass to wide receiver Aldrick Robinson in the fourth quarter on a nice throw after keeping his eyes downfield with the rush closing in.

Questionable officiating marred an otherwise entertaining affair. Cornerback K'wuan Williams was flagged in the end zone with less than four minutes to play in the fourth quarter, which gave Washington a first down. Kirk Cousins ran the ball in from there to make it 26-17 to seemingly put the game out of reach. Later in the fourth, with the game in the balance, wide receiver Pierre Garçon was called for offensive pass interference despite being the intended receiver on the play. The penalty moved the 49ers out of field goal range.

Beathard led a valiant comeback attempt at the end of the game as he engineered a drive that brought the 49ers into Washington territory with a chance to win the game in the closing seconds before Garçon's penalty. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has named Beathard the starter going forward.

Game Notes

-Beathard finished the day 19-36 with 245 yards passing and a touchdown plus a late-game desperation throw that was intercepted.

-Pierre Garçon had 12 targets on the day, catching five of them for 55 yards.

-Solomon Thomas had a sack and led the team with nine tackles, including two for loss.

-Rashard Robinson had an interception of Kirk Cousins a play after an interception was called back.

-The 49ers have set an NFL record by losing five straight games by a total of 13 points.

The 49ers return home next week to face Dallas at Levi's Stadium.

Around the NFL: What should Washington's new team name be?

By David Bonilla
Jul 3, 2020

Being a San Francisco 49ers site, we don't typically report on the happenings around the rest of the NFL that don't potentially impact the Bay Area team. This story, however, has been 87 years in the making. The NFL team representing Washington, D.C., may finally drop "Redskins" from its name, which has long been viewed as offensive. We live in a new world where awareness and compassion seem to be on the rise, and offensive icons like the Washington team name may be on the way out. The team's stadium sponsor, FedEx, this week requested a name change. "We have communicated to the team in Washington our request that they change the team name," FedEx said in a

49ers Have All the Leverage and Should Just Say No to Paying George Kittle What He Wants

By Levin T. Black
Jun 27, 2020

The San Francisco 49ers and star tight end George Kittle are currently working on a contract extension. The two sides have been for awhile. No one outside of the franchise knows how close the two sides are. What is known is the type of money Kittle is seeking. Kittle wants to be paid like a top offensive tackle or wide receiver. His agent went public with this info nearly a month ago. Since then there has been silence from both sides. They could be far apart. Heck, they could have already agreed considering the team managed to keep DeForest Buckner's permission to seek a trade and head coach Kyle Shanahan's extension secrets for MONTHS. It wouldn't be surprising if they aren't close however. This is because the 49ers hold every ounce of leverage in this situation

2021 49ers Free Agents: Who are the Top 10 Re-Sign Priorities?

By Christian Fernandes
Jun 27, 2020

The 49ers are in prime position to make another Super Bowl run this upcoming 2020 season, and many believe the team has the potential to become a dynasty for years to come. However, with 35 players set to become free agents (including 27 unrestricted) on top of looming salary cap issues, the certainty of the future is unknown. Given the Super Bowl window often closes faster than expected, here are the top ten 2021 49er free agents the team must re-sign in order to keep that window open beyond this season: 10) OL Daniel Brunskill – Brunskill has a legitimate shot at becoming the starting right guard on the 49ers offense and is especially good in the run game. Even if he loses the starting spot to Tom Compton, Brunskill's ability to play several positions
