Alex Smith identifies similarity between 49ers QB Brock Purdy and Patrick Mahomes
Former NFL quarterback Alex Smith, who spent his first eight seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, joined Bay Area radio station KNBR on Friday morning and was asked about the team's current signal-caller, Brock Purdy.
Smith also spent five seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. During his last season there, he helped mentor a young quarterback by the name of Patrick Mahomes, who went on to win three Super Bowls.
While Mahomes is widely seen as the best quarterback in the NFL, Smith does see at least one similarity between Purdy and the Chiefs' star.
"Both these guys are football players," Smith said on the "Murph and Markus" show. "These guys are just tough, do whatever it takes to win. They love the moment. That's what's so rare, certainly about Pat,
49ers coordinator Nick Sorensen previews his defense, discusses Brandon Staley's role and more
New 49ers defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen may not have all the answers yet in regards to how his defense will perform in the upcoming season, but it sounds like his approach will remain largely similar to what the team has done in the past under head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Sorensen held his first media session as 49ers defensive coordinator before the team's rookie minicamp on Friday and provided a glimpse on how he wants his defense to look once they take the field in September. The plan is to show the NFL that the 49ers haven't changed much in terms of intensity and flying to the ball.
"I want them to see we're still the standard of what we've always been -- an attacking defense that plays fast," Sorensen said. "We play violent. We play with speed, and we
49ers GM John Lynch: These 2 people are responsible for finding Brock Purdy
After years of striving to solidify the starting quarterback position, the San Francisco 49ers finally struck gold with the last overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, selecting Brock Purdy out of Iowa State.
Admittedly, general manager John Lynch can't take sole credit for the find. During a conversation on the "Pat McAfee Show" this week, Lynch disclosed the individuals within the organization who were instrumental in identifying Purdy as a draft prospect the team should consider.
"I think two people deserve so much credit for Brock Purdy, and one of them is now in our pro department," Lynch shared. "He's a guy by the name of Steve Slowick. His brother's Bobby Slowick, the offensive coordinator down there in Houston. But Steve was the college scout that would go
Alex Smith shares honest insights on 49ers QB Brock Purdy
Former NFL quarterback Alex Smith, who spent his first eight seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, has enthusiastically followed quarterback Brock Purdy's rapid rise. Now the team's starting quarterback, no one could have predicted such success for the former Iowa State passer when the Bay Area team selected him as the No. 262 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Following injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo, Purdy seized his opportunity during his rookie campaign and flourished, leaving Smith impressed and eager to see what the future holds for the 24-year-old signal-caller.
"To see what he's done, it's honestly the best story in the NFL, the best story in football, one of the best stories in sports," Smith said this week on Bay Area radio station 95.7 The
