Colin Kaepernick spoke to the media following the San Francisco 49ers' sixth-straight loss of the season. It is the franchise's first six-game losing streak since 2008. The 49ers now sit with a 1-6 record and a good argument could be made that they are the worst team in the NFL following yet another punishing loss, this time a 34-17 defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

What does Kaepernick thing about being 1-6? He was asked that following the game. "It's not a position we want to be in," Kaepernick said. "We work hard every week. We go through our preparation. We're on top of everything, but we have to go out and execute better. And where our record is right now, we have a bye week coming up. We can get some corrections, get some people healthy, come back and try to make a home stretch run."

"We have to fix this as a team. We have to correct this as a team," is what head coach Chip Kelly tells the team according to Kaepernick.

Meanwhile, Kelly stated that no changes to the team's defensive coaching staff will be made during the bye week. That means that Jim O'Neil is likely to remain as the defensive coordinator.

When asked if he will spend more time with O'Neil during the bye week, Kelly said that they already carve out time to meet and go over things. "There's good communication going on from that standpoint," Kelly said. "So it's not like I don't know what's going on on the defensive side of the ball."

The 49ers enter their bye week searching for answers and won't play again until November 6 when they host the New Orleans Saints at Levi's Stadium.

Three Key Defensive Free Agents to Make the 49ers Better in 2024

By Wayne P. Brown
Mar 10

Although the defense finished as one of the top defenses in 2023 under Steve Wilks, the San Francisco 49ers struggled in a few areas, like stopping the run, finishing the pass rush with sacks, and surrendering explosive plays. In this editorial, we will look to find three defensive players to keep the 49ers defense among the elite. The 49ers have 22 players scheduled to become free agents, 12 being defensive players. The team must address the edge, interior, and cornerback positions. Improving these three areas will keep the 49ers on top. Three defensive ends—Chase Young, Randy Gregory, and Clelin Ferrell—are set to become free agents. Per Pro Football Focus (PFF), the trio totaled 74 pressures (11 sacks, 17 hits, and 46 hurries). Over the weekend, Ward took to social media to reveal that he and White share the same agent and that he is willing to nudge the free-agent defensive back in the right direction.
