Anthony Davis and rookie right guard
Joshua Garnett were seen getting snaps with the first-team offensive line during practice on Tuesday, prior to practice closing to the media. Of course, it wasn't at their respective positions.
Davis, while still on the right side, was getting snaps at guard and Garnett was positioned at left guard where
OG Zane Beadles normally plays. Beadles, a free agent acquisition this offseason, was seen getting some work in at center yesterday. That's probably a good insurance policy for
C Daniel Kilgore should the team decide that
Marcus Martin is no longer in their plans.
The emergence of
Trent Brown at right tackle, a position he is unlikely to shift from, and last year's quality play by
Andrew Tiller have given the 49ers a lot to think about regarding the offensive line. The team obviously wants to get the best five out on the field considering the dismal play of last year's group.
Davis and Garnett have been slowly climbing the depth chart during training camp, but Brown's play has created a bit of a roadblock. Weeks ago, Davis told head coach Chip Kelly that he was willing to move to guard – a smart move since that is the spot where he is most likely to win a starting job. Later, he went to offensive line coach Pat Flaherty and volunteered to move to guard. "It will help us so that's where I'm willing to go," said Davis.
Davis has been so impressed with Brown's play at his former spot, that he felt the move was necessary. "We want the best five on the field and Trent's not going to play guard," said Davis. "He's a giant man."
He sure is a giant man. Brown is bigger at 6-foot-8 and 355 pounds. He is also a little younger than Davis at 23 compared to 26.
Garnett was the 28th overall pick in this year's draft and the 2015 John Outland Trophy Winner, an award given to the most outstanding interior lineman of the year. He was considered to be the best run blocker in this year's draft. A pairing with veteran Pro Bowl tackle
Joe Staley along the left side could benefit his development into a solid pass blocker as well.
It will be interesting to see what the offensive line lineups look like on Friday against the Green Bay Packers.

Anthony "Spice" Adams to announce 49ers' draft picks in 2nd and 3rd rounds
NFL Communications has officially announced the "NFL legends and active players" who will announce selections during Day 2 of the 2024 NFL Draft. Representing the San Francisco 49ers will be former defensive tackle Anthony "Spice" Adams, who spent four seasons with the team and nine in the NFL.
