DeForest Buckner: Chip Kelly is the same guy that recruited him to Oregon

On Tuesday, rookie
DE DeForest Buckner was asked if new San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly has changed at all. "Not at all. Same guy. The same guy that recruited me to Oregon, who was the reason – one of the main reasons – that I went to Oregon," answered Buckner. "It's always great to have that coach that I wanted to play for three or four years ago and having him here – it's awesome."
Another Oregon defensive lineman was selected by the 49ers last year. Buckner will look to bookend a 49ers defensive line with his former Oregon Ducks teammate,
Arik Armstead, and create a desperately needed pass rush in San Francisco. Last season, the 49ers defense got to opposing quarterbacks just 28 times and
ranked 29th against the pass according to
Football Outsiders.

According to Buckner, defensive line coach Jerry Azzinaro wants his players to learn all three positions to better adapt to in-game situation changes. Organized team activities, which prohibit contact and make pads for players unnecessary, have given Buckner an opportunity to work on fundamentals like footwork and hands.
Buckner is getting some help from his veteran teammates. He credited players like
Glenn Dorsey,
Quinton Dial, and
Tony Jerod-Eddie for helping him out as he adapts to the speed and complexity of the NFL. "They have been helping all of us younger guys out. When we watch film, they'll lean over and tell us what we are doing wrong," said Buckner. "They've been really helping us a lot. They make it a comfortable room to be in."
According to Cam Inman of
Bay Area News Group, Buckner lined up with the 49ers third-team defense during practice yesterday. The first-team unit consisted of Armstead,
Mike Purcell, and Dial.
During his last two seasons with the Ducks, Buckner had 164 tackles, 30 for a loss, with 14.5 sacks. He had 232 career college tackles and 18 sacks for Oregon, per
sports-reference.com.

If the 49ers draft a wide receiver, don't expect it to be a smaller guy
The San Francisco 49ers are in good shape for 2024 when it comes to the wide receiver position. What that room looks like after this coming season remains to be seen. Most believe the 49ers will give Brandon Aiyuk a new contract around the start of training camp. But there are no guarantees. As it was reported on Friday, Aiyuk unfollowed the 49ers on Instagram, much like Deebo Samuel did two years ago.
It seems to be how modern-day players negotiate. It's not necessarily anything to be concerned about, but you never truly know how these things will end. There is still potential that the 49ers could trade the star receiver in the next couple of weeks.

49ers sign WR Trent Taylor, reuniting with former draft pick
The San Francisco 49ers announced the signing of wide receiver Trent Taylor to a one-year deal, reuniting with the team's former fifth-round draft pick out of Louisiana Tech.
Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area was the first to report that the 49ers were discussing a potential reunion with Taylor. The receiver was part of head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch's first draft class in 2017 and spent his first four NFL seasons with the team.

Draft Watch: Western Kentucky WR Malachi Corley visiting 49ers on Wednesday
The San Francisco 49ers are hosting several draft prospects this week as the deadline for pre-draft visits draws near. According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2, the team will host former Western Kentucky wide receiver Malachi Corley on Wednesday.
Corley is expected to be a Day 2 pick. San Francisco owns two selections on Day 2—the No. 63 overall pick in the second round and the No. 94 overall pick in the third round. Currently, the receiver is visiting with the Seattle Seahawks.
