The San Francisco 49ers have picked up FS Eric Reid's fifth-year option, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Today was the deadline for the team to pick up the safety's option. Because Reid was a first-round selection, his rookie contract was for four years with an option for the 49ers to pick up a fifth.

"If we can get something done longer, I think we'll look at that. We're also looking at the fifth-year option, as well. I would expect him back (in 2017) for sure, one way or another," Baalke told CSN Bay Area in March.

The fifth-year option will pay Reid $5.676 million in 2017, an amount that will become fully guaranteed in March of the same year. The 49ers can continue to work on a long-term extension for the safety that would keep him with the team beyond the 2017 season. If the team decides that Reid does not fit into their long-term plans, they can still release him before March of 2017.

In 2015, Reid had 60 tackles, a sack, seven passes defended, a forced fumble, and no interceptions. However, in his prior two seasons, he hauled in seven interceptions.

The San Francisco 49ers are bolstering their linebacker corps by signing Eric Kendricks to a one-year deal. Thirteen months ago, ahead of Super Bowl 57, Kendricks spoke with NBC Sports Bay Area at Radio Row in Arizona about the 49ers. Having just finished his final season with the Minnesota Vikings, Kendricks had practiced against the Bay Area squad ahead of their preseason match in August 2022. RELATED: 49ers
