The San Francisco 49ers were among the teams on hand to take a pre-draft look at QB Jared Goff at Cal's pro day on Friday. Representatives from the team spoke with Goff prior to his passing session. Of course, other teams' representatives spoke with him as well, including Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson, who sat on a bench for a discussion with Goff prior to his throwing session. The Browns hold the second overall selection in the draft next month.

49ers head coach Chip Kelly was not one of the representatives that spoke at length with Goff. Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle said that, according to Goff himself, Kelly just spoke to him in passing, simply saying "Hi" to him.

49ers coaching staff members in attendance to watch Goff included Kelly, quarterbacks coach Ryan Day, receivers coach Bob Bicknell, running backs coach Tom Rathman, and assistant offensive line coach Eric Wolford.

Goff's hands measured in at 9 1/8 inches at the pro day, which was 1/8 of an inch longer than the measurement that came in at the NFL Scouting Combine. He even joked about the measurement following the pro day saying, "They got a new measuring tape made for small-handed people."

Are 9 1/8 inch hands seen as a drawback for an NFL quarterback? The measurement is the same as 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick and Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr.

Goff finished his throwing session with a 40-yard pass completion and ended the day 61 of 69 with two drops, per Mat Barrows of the Sacramento Bee. Of course, all passes at a pro day are strategically planned and practiced to show off a quarterback's ability. "Some wobblers but some nice throws as well," said Barrows. "Long-ball accuracy not perfect but solid display at Cal pro day," notes Cam Inman of the Mercury News.

Following the session, Goff even threw some wet footballs after Browns quarterback coach Pep Hamilton dowsed some with water. Goff stated that he didn't expect to throw wet footballs but felt that the session went well.

Daniel Brown of the Mercury News and Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee clocked WR Kenny Lawler's first 40-yard run at 4.68 seconds and 4.70 seconds. RB Brendan Bigelow came in at 4.41. Barrows noted, "We are not trained scouts."

RB Daniel Lasco was also seen working with 49ers running backs coach Tom Rathman.

By David Bonilla
Mar 18
