Sean Payton, Chip Kelly, Mike Shanahan may be interested in 49ers job

Jan 3, 2016 at 12:30 PM--

It was reported earlier today that the San Francisco 49ers are expected to part ways with head coach Jim Tomsula following today's season finale against the St. Louis Rams at Levi's Stadium. The job isn't even officially available yet and names of interested candidates are already starting to pop up.

The first is more speculation than anything else at this point. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport brought up the fact that, last year, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton, who is expected to be allowed to explore his options, may have been interested in the 49ers head coaching job. Payton still has two years left on his contract so compensation for him becomes an issue.

NFL Network's Michael Silver is reporting that both Chip Kelly, the former Philadelphia Eagles head coach, and Mike Shanahan, who was interested in the job last year, would be interested in taking over. He went as far as saying that the two have already reached out to the 49ers to express their interest.

Thanks to beat writer Ryan Sakamoto of Ninerfans.com for pointing this news out.

This past week, former Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren publicly expressed interest in the 49ers job as well. He too was interested last year, but that interest was one sided as the 49ers themselves never reached out to him.

Earlier today, FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reported that the 49ers would like to lure a "big fish," but many are leery about working with Baalke. These reports seem to contradict that notion.

Earlier during their disastrous season, there was a report from Cole stating that the team was leaning toward keeping Tomsula as long as the team competed down the stretch. However, they have been unable to do so and a disgruntled fan base may have changed those plans.

There has been increasing pressure from the Niner Faithful to make a significant change. Fans even went as far as to pay for banners to be flown over two 49ers home games this season. Those banners expressed their disgust with team CEO Jed York. York has been unwilling to address the media or fans until the completion of the season.

Hired as the team's 19th head coach in franchise history, Tomsula has served in the position since being promoted on January 14th of 2015, following the dismissal of Jim Harbaugh after a 2014 season where San Francisco finished with an 8-8 record. Prior to that, Tomsula served as the team's defensive line coach since the 2007 season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars were reportedly interested in trading for star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. However, the San Francisco 49ers' asking price of the No. 17 overall pick plus a player was seemingly too high for the team. Now, it appears another AFC team might be trying to pry Aiyuk away from the West Coast. Andrew Fillipponi of Pittsburgh-area radio station 93.7 The Fan reports that the Steelers are looking to work out a deal with the 49ers for the receiver. "Sources: The Steelers have looked into 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk," Fillipponi wrote on social media. "He's entering the last year of his contract. Steelers would have to execute a sign and trade. Andy Reid praises 49ers' Brock Purdy, has advice for Kyle Shanahan

By David Bonilla
Mar 25

Super Bowl-winning head coach Andy Reid of the Kansas City Chiefs witnessed all he needed from Brock Purdy last season to assure him that the San Francisco 49ers are in capable hands at the quarterback position. Purdy was an MVP nominee in 2023 and had his 49ers just a play or two away from clinching a Super Bowl victory away from the Chiefs. Unfortunately, for Purdy and the 49ers, Reid and his own quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, widely regarded as the best in the game today, dashed their Super Bowl dreams in overtime last month. According to NBC Sports Bay Area, speaking at the NFL owners meetings on Monday, Reid stated, "Yeah, I

Kyle Shanahan: 49ers hope to keep Brandon Aiyuk, Brock Purdy together

By David Bonilla
Mar 26

Last week, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan ran into his wide receiver, Brandon Aiyuk, while on vacation in Cabo San Lucas. "He was randomly at our hotel. I don't think he wanted to be," the coach shared on Tuesday while speaking to reporters at the NFL owners meetings. The 49ers are currently negotiating a long-term extension with Aiyuk to ensure he remains with the team for the foreseeable future. However, with it only being March, it's challenging to predict how everything will unfold. Typically, under the leadership of Shanahan and general manager John Lynch, the 49ers have reached agreements with their star players closer to training camp in July. Lynch stated yesterday that the
