49ers promote Jarryd Hayne to the active roster; Alex Boone placed on IR

Dec 26, 2015 at 1:03 PM--

On Saturday, the San Francisco 49ers promoted RB Jarryd Hayne from the practice squad to the active roster. The team had until 1 PM (PT) to activate him in time to play on Sunday against the Lions in Detroit.

It was reported earlier today that Hayne was traveling with the team to Detroit, giving a strong indication that he would be activated to the 53-man roster.

To make room for Hayne, the 49ers placed LG Alex Boone on inured reserve, ending his season. Boone suffered a sprained MCL in a game against the Cleveland Browns. He is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent following the season.

Hayne, a rookie, was on the active roster for six games before being deactivated prior to the team's first game against the Seattle Seahawks. He was waived the following week and when no other team claimed him, was signed to the 49ers practice squad.

Kendall Gaskins and the newly acquired DuJuan Harris were the only healthy running backs on the 53-man roster. RB Shaun Draughn (knee) has been ruled out for Sunday.

Hayne has 25 yards rushing on eight carries this season and has averaged 9.5 yards on punt returns. Hayne was a big Australian media storyline during preseason. Last year, he left a stellar career in the National Rugby League to chase his dream of playing in the NFL.
