Cam Inman of The Mercury News:
Ellington flashed his speed and play-making skills at wide receiver and as a return specialist, his roles last season as a rookie. Ellington's best catches were on a 40-yard rope from Colin Kaepernick into the end zone, and on an acrobatic grab of a Dylan Thompson pass.
Aldon Smith signaled he would have sacked Colin Kaepernick near the goal-line if this was a game instead of the second practice of 49ers training camp.
Ahmad Brooks has shined through two practices.
Kaepernick overthrew Quinton Patton and Torrey Smith, but he also had some on-the-money passes, so don't overreact to anything here.
Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area:
The 49ers' defensive line was able to supply consistent pressure on the 49ers' quarterbacks on Sunday evening at Levi's Stadium. Aldon Smith, Ahmad Brooks and Glenn Dorsey proved disruptive against the 49ers' first-team offense.
Okoye got would-be sacks on back-to-back plays while working against first-year tackle Ben Gottchalk. He also put a nice move on Dillon Farrell to win a one-on-one pass-rush drill.
Catch of the day: Wide receiver Jerome Simpson, who was out of the NFL last due to off-the-field issues, showed his sprawled out to make a diving catch just inches off the ground on a crossing pattern.
One day after running back Carlos Hyde showed some good hands out of the backfield, he struggled catching the ball. Hyde had two dropped passes early in practice.
Undrafted wide receiver Dres Anderson's only catch was during a 7-on-7 period.
Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee:
The crispness with which the 49ers went through their Day 1 practice mostly vanished on Day 2. Passes were batted down. Nice guy Jim Tomsula even lost his temper at one point.
[Ahmad] Brooks, however, looks as fit as he's ever been in the recent camp.
While Brooks looks fit, Lynch does not, which may explain why he landed on the non-football injury list last week.
Cornerback Tramaine Brock had his second straight solid practice. On a busted play, Kaepernick scampered to his left and hoisted a long pass to Anquan Boldin down the seam. Brock, who has always been a ball hawk in practice, jumped in front of the wide receiver for the interception.
Grant Cohn of The Press Democrat:
[Bruce Ellington] made a team-high six catches during team drills, including two 15-yard catches over the middle and a 50-yard catch for a touchdown.
The starting Nickel back for the first-team defense, Brock intercepted the first pass Kaepernick threw during team drills.
Toward the end of practice Armstead bull-rushed one of the Niners' interior offensive lineman (I couldn't tell which one) and tagged Kaepernick for the sack.
[The Niners] got slower as practice went on. By the end of it, they were getting to the line of scrimmage with fewer than 17 seconds left on the clock and snapping the ball just before time expired.
Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle:
Running back Reggie Bush, defensive tackle Darnell Dockett and cornerback Jimmie Ward did not participate in team drills for the second straight day.
The 49ers are bringing Dockett (torn ACL) and Ward (broken foot) back slowly from injuries they sustained last year.
Paul Gutierrez of ESPN:
Bruce Ellington dazzled, both as the 49ers' No. 3 receiver and in returning kicks, flashing the speed that projects him to be such a dangerous weapon.
After starting practice looking sharp, Kaepernick seemed to struggle.
After going primarily with their base defense Saturday night, the 49ers sprinkled in some nickel defense Sunday. Brock slid into the slot and Dontae Johnson came on as a cornerback.
[Ahmad Brooks] appears to be in much better shape and has been around the ball during team drills.
Kurt Warner observes
Two-time NFL MVP Kurt Warner was observing the 49ers' practice today at levi's Stadium. He was there for NFL Network. Warner was also there to see quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who he worked with during the offseason in Arizona to improve the signal caller's passing mechanics.
Continued turf troubles?
The sod at Levi's Stadium continued to have issues during the team's second day of practice. Earlier today, head coach Jim Tomsula didn't seem too concerned with the problem when he announced that the team would continue to practice on the 49ers' home field.
