Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area reports on Twitter (@MaioccoCSN) that San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh and free-agent quarterback Alex Smith are talking and "ironing things out."

Minutes ago, Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee (@mattbarrows) reported that Harbaugh was back in the building at the 49ers' headquarters in Santa Clara.

Am told that Harbaugh is back in the building and has been for a while. But how? We've been out front all day. #coachninja

The team has offered Smith a 3-year, $24 million deal with $10 million guaranteed. The only other team that showed some interest was Miami and it was announced minutes ago that the Dolphins signed David Garrard, eliminating some of the leverage that Smith may have had.

Maiocco adds the following quote from team CEO Jed York:

"We have a contract on the table and it's up to him. We'd like for him (Alex Smith) to be here, and we'll see where it goes."

When asked if he expects Smith to be his quarterback, York added:

"I hope he is."
