? This is not an excuse. It's an attempt to explain the obvious sharp drop off in ST play.
It seems they do.

Nobody else has stood up to be a difference maker like Blake was.

People underestimate how big Special teams and special teams stars mean to a team. I was really pissed when we let him go and not resign him.

needing to explaining the obvious ?

We haven't given up a legit TD on STs
how many TD's have we given up this year on ST already?? Including the ones called back? At least 3-4, right?
Hell yeah we miss Blake, and Jones. We never should of let them go. We also should of kept Rock over Dixon. Our STs sucks, plain and simple.

if they dont i know i do.......David Wlison was gettn some mad yards on sunday..........last year opponents started most of time on kickoffs in their own territory this year u see them near mid field & beyond

Special teams is the weak link of this team this year

all Akers need to do is kick it deeper...that one to start the second half was a short kick...Akers had a bad day all around...he usually kicks the ball in the back of the end zone...

So no TDs = good STs?

We'll agree to disagree.
Does anyone know how Blake is doing for his new team?

One aspect missing from last year's successful formula? Stifling special teams. The 49ers constantly put the offense and defense in advantageous positions in 2011. This season, the 49ers have struggled, particularly in punt and kickoff coverage, where they are ranked 30th in covering punts and 31st in defending kickoffs. One reason always cited by "so-called experts" as Jim Harbaugh likes to call us is that the 49ers miss special teams ace Blake Costanzo.

The 49ers had little interest in re-signing Costanzo and he eventually landed in Chicago. So are the so-called experts right? Let's go to the locker room."We do miss Blake," fullback Bruce Miller said. "He was a heck of a special teams player. He had a great feel for whatever team it was, he had a good feel for what was going on. He played for (special teams coach) Brad Seely for years."Long snapper Brian Jennings said, "I like Blake as a player."Costanzo, who is a linebacker in name only, is an exclusive special teams core player and has little or no value as a back up. Sometimes it's difficult to carry a player who only does special teams particularly if a team has young talent they want to develop.

The 49ers are such a team.Nevertheless, Costanzo's devotion to special teams, made him an instant leader and his example forced other players to take special teams seriously."There is no replacing a guy like Blake Costanzo, he's in a league of his own," linebacker Larry Grant said. "Everybody misses Blake, fans, players on this team, coaches. But unfortunately, he's not here. We got a find a way to get back as a team. We just got to play better; we got to move forward."The 49ers are always attempting to get bigger, stronger and faster and that may be the reason they didn't try to sign Costanzo.

The team may have felt he could be replaced with younger, more athletic options. Late round picks Darius Fleming and Cam Johnson were two linebackers who could have stepped into the breach. However, Fleming injured his knee and will probably miss the season, Johnson was slow to recover from minor knee surgery and was cut.The 49ers did sign a special teams ace in former Raider Rock Cartwright, but Anthony Dixon beat him out for a roster spot.

Nevertheless, the 49ers do have plenty of talent to perform well on special teams. Miller said players need to stay in the right spot, and that's where the players need to remember Costanzo's example."He had a great feel for where to be at the right time," Miller said. "He was always in the film somewhere. We got to have guys step up and fill in that spot that he left."

Not only do the players miss him , the fans miss him too , our special teams got weaker when we lost Costanzo and Colin Jones

Paragraphs are your friend.
ST coach needs to step up his game.

We are getting worked on returns.

The best players are gone. We gutted it so we could keep tons of extra DL, WR's, and RB's....
