Week 1: Thoughts after rewatching the game...

Great job Marvin49! It was just completely awesome to watch this team totally just dominate the Packers at Lambeau field live. It was just unbelievable how many of the Packers fans realized they were just getting manhandled all over the field and knew it. If it wasn't for the punt return for a TD(that shouldn't have been, but oh well) it would have been a double digit domination in a great big win. All of the packers fan were extremely nice and my girlfriend and me had a awesome experience! We are gonna have a great team this season and it is gonna be so much fun to watch this team all season long!
I really think the niners need to add a pass rush specialist or something. Those front 4 guys are gonna wear down if they have to play every snap of the game.

You make a good point, but I think we did attempt to rotate a little bit. I do remember seeing a 3rd OLB in the game. I don't know if it was Haggan or Dobbs or both, but there was somebody else in there for at least a few snaps.

Also, Green Bay is a completely different opponent from anybody else we will face this year. They are 100% pass. We had to be in nickle and dime most of the game. Not even Soap saw the field much. We should go to a much more normal rotation against the Lions.

Actually I thought you did and it was cool. ;-) Got no problem with it if you ever want to do that.

Why don't you guys pooled the efforts and start a Marvin and the Oldman Observation w/Play-by-Play each week. Would be good to get 2 views of the same game in the same thread. Try not to agree with each other on every play. Like the Siskel and Ebert of the Niners game review and play by play.

Actually I think it worked fine as separate threads. Not sure why mods merged them. Mine is more of my impressions why oldmans go much more in depth.

RE: Running game. We all know Harbaugh was a Bill Walsh disciple and yesterday proved it yet again. The OP mentioned innovating in the running game with different runs coming from the same formation or look. Walsh did that all the time. At the snap, the blocking appeared no different from any other play. It was not until 1 second after the snap the the actual play began to take place. This kept the defense guessing until it was too late to stop it. Harbaugh/Roman did that numerous times yesterday.

Using big linemen as blockers in the backfield was also a Walsh innovation. Guy McIntyre often lined up in the backfield for extra push. JH has taken that a step or two further. (Yes, I know Ditka put the Fridge in the backfield first.)

Good stuff. We all wondered last season what Harbaugh, Smith and Company could with a full off-season and TC. We just found out.
Actually I believe Walsh put McIntyre in and Ditka put Perry in after.

Correct. Ditka copied Walsh.

I think it merged because nobody ever read the play by play. I know I never did

Rodgers pass wasn't a bad pass. it was a product of good disguise of your scheme, Rodgers didn't see Nav, at the pre snap and at the snap, he expected Nav to cover someone else, but Nav let player slide off to another player and slid back into the middle, Aaron didn't see Nav underneath sliding back to the middle and going upfield when he threw the ball. If you watch the replay, you may say how can he not see Nav in the way, you have to look at it from the QB's eyes with linemen (D and OL) in front of him, Troy Aikman, commented on that.

May be a product of being a confident qb like Fangio was saying, coming back to bite Rodger in the a**. When you are confident you starts to assumed. Fangio got one on Rodgers.

Aren't all good QB's supposed to be confident ? In the end the point is to disguise your coverages and hide it, cat and mouse, hide and seek. tag Aaron was it, we just hid it better. Plus we played the odds, the more passes you throw and if you have a decent D, you should get a pick or fumble. Law of averages.

burying your head in the sand is liberating and of no surprise to any of us...
One thing i haven't seen discussed today was Aldon Smiths Penalty

Idk if he meant it or was he trying to grab his helmet all crazy and it fell off

The great thing abou this offense is there doesn't seem to be "feature player." Everybody gets a turn to succeed. First they utilize the WR (all of them), then the TEs (both) while mixing in the run game with Hunter and Gore. This is going to be a really difficult offense to defend against.

Frank Gore has been and still is the "feature player." That has not changed and will not change.

I'm note sure if he would have played better...he was getting tossed around quite a bit and the last thing you want to do with a broken nose is get tossed around and have that helmet bobble-head-dolling on you (ouch)!. Props to him for man-ing up though! BUT, what choice did we have...move Boone to LT and insert L.Davis at RG? Also, the thing ppl are dismissing is the fact that GB clearly targeted Staley as the weak link for that game and we're lucky Alex held onto the ball. And once again, Staley is hurt. Let's hope this is it for the year and he can handle pass rushers 1on1...it will be critical to getting as many receiving options out in the open as possible (for you Madden/FF friends!

Gotta disagree on that "targeting" line, GB left Mathews on Staley because VD often lines up on the right side, so the shortest route to the QB was through Staley. Staley didn't get tossed, Mathews just capitalized on the battles he won against Staley, but Staley won his fair share too. This wasn't a "2011 Suggs" performance by any means, and CM dissapeared for the majority of this game.

And there were many choices that the niners had like rolling protection, giving staley TE support, or moving the RB to that side. But the coaches felt comfortable enough with Staley not to completely alter the gameplan... which shows that Mathews made the most of his 1v1 wins opposed to "dominating" Staley.

No worries...don't fully agree but that's cool. We actually move VD (and Walker) around all the time (hence how he got so open on occasion). Usually with a good pass rusher, you move him around to create mismatches...see Aldon yesterday (played WILL, SAM, RDE/LDE, stunts, etc.). Matthews was 100% on Staley. That's a game plan and like I said, Matthews usually plays the opposite side (Brooks SAM position). They saw a weakness and exploited it...all game long. Staley is supposed to be a pro bowl LT and a top 100 player? He not only got pwned in pass protection but in the run game as well (if I remember correctly). Matthews beat him with quickness, speed, moves AND strength (per Staley himself - much stronger than he thought). Did he not watch tape of Matthews? Staley is a man and he admitted he got pwned and he played with a broken nose; mad respect for him but expect more teams to target Staely going forward now. Had Alex dropped one of those balls on Staley-sacks, we might be having a different conversation right now. The coaching staff took a calculated risk and put trust in Staley against a pro bowl pass rusher. I'm curious to see if the coaches adjust going forward...

That is why we rush the ball, eats the clock, the D gets a rest (providing they score or move the chains enough). There is a reason why the Pats, Saints, and Pack have less than average D-They pass so much and either get off the field quickly or score quickly that their D gets on the field quickly too and wears out. Also, when you pass, the clock stops, so technically the number of possessions a team gets increases. Further more when teams like the pats score a lot, the otherside will will pass a lot too.

Green Bay is one dimensional, if they really ever develope a run game, they will be scary, because then you have to be more mentally aware, play actions become more effective and your safeteys,LBs are more prone to bite. I really don't think the packers are the best team in their division when all is healthy, the bears are more fearsome, good running game and good passing attack plus they have a D.

I agree with both you. Hopefully Haggan can provide some spark in sub-packages. He's older, but if he only in a few plays a game, it will hide his age.

Its been talked about, his helmet got kicked accidently by Aaron after the play/sack, and he had to take it off to readjust and put it back on, but was called for the penalty cause the ref thought he had taken it off to celebrate after the sack. NFL rule was to prevent people taking off their helmet and celebrate and by showing their kisser for the TV. However the ref blew it. They took back the penalty on the punt return for an obvious penalty that existed and didn't take back the penalty for a penalty that was not. Remember last year when Aldon celebrated by running all the way back to the bench, sat down and then took off his helmet?
