Smith called his own plays in the 2 minute drill

So WTF do we need Raye for then??

I'm pretty sure QB coach Mike Johnson and Alex Smith could manage without Jimmy Raye.

"...But the incident — followed by a perfect two-minute drill at the end of the first half where Smith also called all his own plays and generated a touchdown — was indicative of how far Smith 2.0 has come.
Just wow if it's true. Let the guy play already.

Raye has a "script" of 20 plays or so that he must call. They all seem to consist of running behind the guard for 2 yds though
Alex Smith killed what should have been a scoring drive by getting a delay of game penalty and then taking a sack which put the Niners out of FG range. Just as he did last week, on the Niners final drive he looked more like the old Alex then the new and improved Alex. While everyone celebrates how great he played on Sunday consider that Smith led this offense to only 7pts. I don't give him credit for handing the ball off on Gore's 64yard td run. When we needed Smith on the final drive he failed...again.

I blame Raye more. When Smith called his own plays he succeeded because he got into rhythm. Raye and his BS play calling is killing Smith.

Delay of game probably happened cuz Raye fell asleep and didn't get him the call until 10s left on the clock.

Smith acknowledged as much after the game on this particular. It's part of playing the game. It's can be improve.

Sorry but Smith "takes a sack" because the called play didn't had receivers running patterns much too deep for the protection provided. LOL, it's as if you think Smith wants to get sacked or something. Again, delay of game was caused by plays taking too long to get into the huddle. Just like with the Houston game, this came on shotgun 3-wide, non-base formation PASSING PLAYS that Raye has no familiarity in running - they just don't practice that much. Alex was led the offense to 7 points when he was ALLOWED to call his on stuff. That's a proven fact. When we needed protection on a final drive, the OFFENSIVE LINE failed again.

Niners final drive:

Did Raye cause Alex to overthrow a WIDE OPEN WR and hit a Colts defensive back in the hands? Luckily for Alex the DB dropped the ball otherwise it would have been a pick 6. Alex threw what was very close to being a pick 6 on the 49ers final drive last week too. Anyway, on the final drive Alex was inaccurate and pulled the ball down the second he felt any pressure which resulted in him scrambling for a yard loss on one play and taking a sack on the 49ers final offensive play (before punting).

That is a fair gripe, but its not the reason we lost the game. The lack of a run game and the 4th quarter defense forgetting that Dallas Clark is Dallas Clark are more to blame.

Just as a side note: As lights out as the D played the whole game, the thing that pisses me off most is that they had a mental-lapse and the only offensive TD the Colts scored was that stupid HB pass.
Alex played his entire college career in a shotgun spread formation.

I'll never understand why defensive backs bite so hard on run fakes when the upside is they are the last man in on a gang tackle, and the alternative is giving up a long TD. As great as Spencer has been this year, I think he's getting off a little too easy for being responsible for the TD this week and Daniels' TD last week.

You know just before Montana hit JT for the winning TD against the Sam Wysch Bengals, on the previous play, he threw it straight to one of the Bengals DB. But none want to remember that part because the result of the game was just too thrilling S**t is going to happened whether you're a HOF qb or 5th year resurgent.
