Chip Kelly on Kaepernick: “I think sometimes he’s very misunderstood”

San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly was once again asked to share his thoughts on Colin Kaepernick's national anthem protest and his stance.
Kelly has supported Kaepernick and his position throughout the season and called the cause of the quarterback's protest "heinous." He was asked what his reaction is to Kaepernick's compliments regarding Kelly's support. "I think the comment was very self-explanatory," Kelly said. "There's people that are dying senselessly – both police officers and citizens of this country – and if you don't see that, then I think you're either blind or ignorant.
"I mean, there's a huge issue going on in this country and I don't think anybody can say that they think it's ok. I don't think you're going to get that from anybody and that's just what I meant. There's a lot of senseless things going on in this nation that need to be addressed. So I support his take on that."
"I've had conversations with Kap," Kelly continued. "I know he's got a lot going on on his plate and I think part of that is making sure that he understands that people do support him in terms of where he is and what he stands for and what the things are. I think sometimes he's very misunderstood. I think people's reaction toward what he's trying to do is very misunderstood. But I think Colin has a clear heart and a clear vision of what he's trying to get accomplished and I support that."
It was announced on Tuesday that Kaepernick would become the team's new starting quarterback, in time to face the Buffalo Bills this weekend. On Wednesday, Kaepernick signed a restructured deal that eliminates the future guarantees in salary should the quarterback suffer a serious injury.

The San Francisco 49ers are hosting several draft prospects this week as the deadline for pre-draft visits draws near. According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2, the team will host former Western Kentucky wide receiver Malachi Corley on Wednesday.
Corley is expected to be a Day 2 pick. San Francisco owns two selections on Day 2—the No. 63 overall pick in the second round and the No. 94 overall pick in the third round. Currently, the receiver is visiting with the Seattle Seahawks.

Rapoport: 49ers send clear message to teams inquiring about Brandon Aiyuk
Ian Rapoport didn't offer much of an update on the ongoing contract negotiations between the San Francisco 49ers and their standout wide receiver, Brandon Aiyuk. However, the NFL insider emphasized one thing: The team is not entertaining trade discussions at this juncture.
Reacting to Aiyuk's decision to unfollow the 49ers on Instagram, Rapoport couldn't help but chuckle at the latest development. This practice has become commonplace among players who are unhappy with their contract situations. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel similarly took this action in 2022 before requesting to be traded just before the draft.

With the 2024 NFL Draft less than a week away, it's common for the rumor mill to start churning, especially with players who are actively seeking a new contract. It was just two short years ago that WR Deebo Samuel requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers prior to draft day, only for cooler heads to prevail and eventually agree to a new deal.
Now, it's WR Brandon Aiyuk's turn to try and get paid and rumors surfaced over the weekend that he too would request to be dealt. While that report was quickly shot down by his agent, there's still a lot of discussion about Aiyuk's future and if other teams will come calling on draft night.
