There's no question this is an awesome Chronicle cover and that the victory remains one of the greatest in 49ers history, but what's sometimes forgotten is this almost felt like an afterthought in the shadow of what's arguably the greatest play in NFL championship game history. "The thing that sticks out in my mind is how anticlimactic the Super Bowl felt," said Mike Lerseth, now The Chronicle's assistant sports editor. In the minds of many 49er fans, the biggest hurdle had been cleared two weeks earlier when Joe Montana and Dwight Clark hooked up on 'The Catch' to beat the Cowboys in the NFC title game. Down 20-0 at halftime, they scored 14 fourth-quarter points to pull within 26-21 and the outcome wasn't decided until Clark — who else? — recovered an onside kick with a handful of seconds left.
