Trent Baalke will conduct interview with Tom Coughlin today

Jan 12, 2016 at 9:42 AM--

According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, it will be San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke that will be conducting the interview today with former New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin.

The interview will take place on the east coast since 49ers CEO is in Houston for the league's owner meetings.

York was the one that met with Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson for five hours on Sunday. York has reportedly been part of every interview during this head coaching hiring process. This is interesting because during his press conference following the season, York had indicated that Baalke would be leading the coach search.

The 69-year old Coughlin had been the Giants head coach since 2004. Before that, he was the first head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. He has a career coaching record of 181-153 and has two Super Bowl championships (XLII, XLVI) as a head coach and another as an assistant on his resume.

Trent Baalke and Tom Coughlin are both Bills Parcells protégés. Coughlin worked for Parcells as the receivers coach with the Giants from 1988 through 1990. Baalke worked under Parcells as a scout with the New York Jets in the late 1990s. In fact, it was Parcells that Baalke wanted to hire during the team's coaching search in 2011.

Nate Davis of USA Today Sports recently published his free-agency grades for each NFL team. While the San Francisco 49ers didn't make any attention-grabbing additions like they did last year with the Javon Hargrave signing, they did shake things up along the defensive line. The Niners bid farewell to their longest-tenured player, Arik Armstead, releasing him for salary cap savings
