49ers Notebook: Why Jimmie Ward has no love for the Rams; Brandon Aiyuk moves on from Fred Warner scuffle; DeMeco Ryans talks second-year DBs
By Kirk Larrabee

What rubbed 49ers safety Jimmie Ward the wrong way about the Los Angeles Rams last season to the point where he's already looking to face off against them on the field?
Ward spoke about that subject on Sunday, as he was one of a handful of players to talk with local and national media during and after 49ers practice. Also speaking with reporters was defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans, who provided a number of thoughts on a few defensive players who are competing for roster spots and playing time.
For a rundown of what Ward said Sunday as well as some quotes from Ryans, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk's thoughts on his squabble with linebacker Fred Warner, and much more, check out this version of 49ers Notebook.

Kyle Shanahan on why it was time for 49ers to transition to Trey Lance; Analyst calls it an unnecessary risk

Mike Tannenbaum made his opinion on the San Francisco 49ers' quarterback situation very clear this week. The former NFL executive turned analyst was asked on ESPN's GetUp if the move from Jimmy Garoppolo, who enjoyed a lot of success in his four-and-a-half year run as the Niners' starting quarterback, to second-year quarterback Trey Lance is a risk.
"Yes, and it's an unnecessary one," Tannenbaum said bluntly. "You have a great quarterback in Jimmy Garoppolo, who over the last three years has taken your team to the Super Bowl and the [NFC] Championship Game. I love Trey Lance. I think his upside is compelling. But why would you risk not playing Jimmy Garoppolo, especially early, when you have a team that can win right now?

Drake Jackson's usage might vary week to week; Young 49ers CBs have an opportunity vs. Packers

Maybe soon, Drake Jackson will become the complementary bookend to Nick Bosa that the San Francisco 49ers envisioned for Dee Ford. That was the hope when the team used its first selection in this year's draft, a second-round pick, on the defensive end out of USC.
DeMeco Ryans is in his second year as the 49ers' defensive coordinator. He is working to ensure young players like Jackson are prepared for the rigors of an NFL season. He also wants to put those players in the best position to succeed. Their success is the 49ers' success, after all. For now, it looks like the 49ers have Samson Ebukam penciled in as the starter opposite Bosa. That role should eventually land with Jackson.
"With Drake, he's coming along," Ryans told reporters after Wednesday's practice.

San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans spoke with reporters after Wednesday's training camp practice. Here is everything he had to say.
Transcript provided by the San Francisco 49ers Communications staff.
After a practice like yesterday, things were getting physical there. With LB Fred Warner, is there anything you feel like you need to say to him in terms of walking that line between kind of pushing it and going over?
"I think Fred has done a great job of leading this team, leading this defense so Fred understands the limits. It's training camp, it happens all the time and at all 32 training camps, I'm pretty sure scuffles and things like that happen. You want guys to be smart and understand we are teammates
