49ers activate TE Charlie Woerner from PUP list

The San Francisco 49ers have activated tight end Charlie Woerner from the active/physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list. He had been recovering from a core muscle injury. The team is preparing for its second preseason game, an August 20 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. The team announcement came before Sunday's 12:45 p.m. practice. San Francisco made Woerner (6-5, 241) a sixth-round selection (No. 190 overall) out of Georgia in 2020. He registered five receptions for 52 yards through 17 game appearances (three starts) with the 49ers last season, per Pro Football Reference. San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan provided several injury updates via a conference call on Saturday afternoon, the day after the team's 28-21 win over the Green Bay Packers in its preseason opener. DE Drake Jackson The rookie defensive end left Friday night's game in the second quarter. Shanahan said after the game that Jackson was dealing with a "shoulder stinger" and would undergo further tests. That's what it turned out to be, said Shanahan. Jimmy Garoppolo isn't practicing, but he is throwing next to his soon-to-be former San Francisco 49ers teammates. He looks healthy, too, according to one reporter. "I watched Jimmy Garoppolo make about 25 full-tilt throws to a junior staffer on a side field during the 49ers' training-camp practice Friday," wrote Tim Kawakami of The Athletic, "and there's no question he's close to 100 percent healed after his March shoulder surgery and one of the top 32 QBs in the league right now. 49ers release CB Darqueze Dennard, 3 others ahead of first roster cut-down deadline

It looks like the San Francisco 49ers are comfortable with rookie Samuel Womack III serving as the team's nickel cornerback. The Niners announced that they have released veteran Darqueze Dennard, who was competing with Womack for the spot. Dennard wasn't the only player cut as the team makes its way down to the 85-player maximum required by 1 p.m. tomorrow. The following players were also waived.
