SANTA CLARA — Veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks did not come to the 49ers just to occupy space in the team’s locker room.But how long will it take for him to get to a point where he can suit up and make a contribution?
That part will be figured out on the 49ers’ practice field as the week progresses.

Ricky Pearsall is out for the season after undergoing knee surgery in August. Christian Kirk is on injured reserve with a calf injury, but will be eligible to play after four weeks.
Rookie De’Zhaun Stribling underwent ankle surgery, and he is not expected to be back until late November. Demarcus Robinson is out for a month or more with a high ankle sprain.
