49ers open 21-day practice window for second-year wide receiver Jacob Cowing

The 49ers are opening the practice window for wide receiver Jacob Cowing, who missed the entire regular season with a hamstring injury.“Cowing’s window opened this week,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday on a conference call with Bay Area reporters. “He’ll start practicing here on Wednesday.”Cowing was a fourth-round pick (No. 135) in the 2024 NFL Draft.He appeared in 15 games as a rookie. He caught just four passes for 80 yards, but he also served as the team’s top return man.Cowing averaged a respectable 8.8 yards on 28 punt returns. He only had one kickoff return for 32 yards.Cowing had a strong offseason program and looked as if he put himself in position to be a contributor on offense this season. However, he sustained a hamstring injury on the first day of training camp then aggravated the condition upon his return approximately three weeks later.There is not likely to be a roster spot available for Cowing as the 49ers enter the playoffs. Skyy Moore has fared well in the return game. Moore was chosen as a Pro Bowl alternate when the NFC team recently was announced.Moore averaged 11.6 yards on 25 punt returns...
