SANTA CLARA — The 49ers got a couple of key defensive linemen back on the field when they returned for a short workout Monday.Rookies Mykel Williams and CJ West returned to the practice field after missing time with hyperextended knees they sustained during joint practices this summer.Williams went down with his injury when the 49ers practiced against the Denver Broncos on Aug. 7. He did not play in any of the 49ers’ preseason games.West sustained a similar injury on Aug. 14 in Las Vegas during a one-on-one pass-rush drill against the Raiders. He sat out the final two preseason games.When the 49ers’ defense took the field on Monday, Williams and Alfred Collins lined up with the starters.The 49ers are expecting to receive major contributions from their rookie class, most notably the three defensive linemen they selected within the first four rounds of the draft.Williams was the 49ers’ top pick at No. 11 overall, while Collins was a second-round selection and West was chosen in the fourth round.Here are other notes and observations from 49ers practice on Monday:— Right guard Dominick Puni appears to be much further along in his bid to be physically...
