San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has had a chance to watch the film from Friday night's 28-21 preseason win over the Green Bay Packers. It was an opportunity for a lot of young players to shine. But, more importantly, it was a chance for them to gain valuable experience. Second-year quarterback Trey Lance, the team's starter, finished the night 4-of-5 for 92 yards, a touchdown, and a perfect passer rating of 158.3. He was among the highest-graded 49ers players by Pro Football Focus. After reviewing the film, Shanahan said that his evaluation of the 22-year-old quarterback isn't much different from what he said last night. "He did a

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan sat down with NFL Network's Steve Mariucci and Michael Yam ahead of Tuesday's practice. Mariucci, a former 49ers head coach, asked Shanahan about his new starting quarterback, Trey Lance. Shanahan has worked with several quarterbacks in the past—like pocket passer Matt Ryan in Atlanta and the dynamic Robert Griffin III in Washington. Mariucci asked Shanahan where Lance fits when comparing the 22-year-old passer to those different types of guys. "That's what I enjoyed watching him in college so much for because you were able to see both [skill sets]," Shanahan responded. "It was at a much lesser level, and it was only for a year of football, so you didn't have a ton to go off of, but you saw, the offense that they

Kyle Shanahan: 49ers playbook not changing for Trey Lance; Jauan Jennings tough to cover

Some expect the San Francisco 49ers offense to evolve with second-year quarterback Trey Lance at the helm. While that is probably true, it will not be by design. There won't be a drastic change to the playbook. Instead, Lance can extend plays and potentially get the football further down the field for some explosive plays. Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters before Saturday's practice and was asked about the playbook. Is he considering changing it to take advantage of Lance's unique athleticism? "Not really at all," Shanahan responded. "I mean, you do the same stuff, and you just got a couple of more elements. When you have the threat of a running quarterback, that can change defenses. And when you see how that changes them, then you adjust to

The San Francisco 49ers play three preseason games in the span of 14 days. Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters before Tuesday's practice and laid out his plan to ensure the starters get some exhibition reps without getting worn down. For second-year quarterback Trey Lance, that means playing in just two preseason games. "We've got a pretty good idea [for the preseason plan]," Shanahan said. "I definitely want to see how these practices go these first two days. I'd like to get guys to play in this game, mainly because I don't want them to play in the second game." On Friday, the 49ers will host the Green Bay Packers at Levi's Stadium. Then, eight days later, they will play the Minnesota Vikings on the road. San Francisco will practice with the Vikings
