By Kirk Larrabee

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan provided status updates for a number of players after practice on Friday, including quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo—but he still stopped short of naming him the starter for this weekend's game against the Los Angeles Rams (Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET/1:25 p.m. PT, FOX). Shanahan stuck to his stance of not announcing a starter between Garoppolo and rookie Trey Lance in order to give Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris more to think about, but he was clearly encouraged with what he saw from Garoppolo at practice throughout the week after missing last Sunday's start against the Houston Texans with a thumb injury. "He had a good week—a good week of practice when he was in there. I feel good with where he's at right now," Shanahan

He provided several injury updates. Trent Williams, tackle Williams did not play on Sunday. He was inactive due to an elbow injury. Shanahan says Williams will be doing everything he can to play against the Cowboys. However, the coach didn't sound optimistic that his starting left tackle would practice on Wednesday. "He wasn't going to be in good enough shape to protect himself [on Sunday] or the quarterback in the game," Shanahan said. "That was tough on him, but I think he was as excited as anyone after we won because I know he's going to

The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their playoff contest against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Nothing changed from what head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters before practice. The 49ers continue to be cautious with their quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo. He was limited.
