Did not practice:
- LB Azeez Al-Shaair (leg)
- CB Tim Harris (groin)
- CB Dontae Johnson (foot)
- TE MyCole Pruitt (calf)
- WR Deebo Samuel (groin)
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said cornerback Dontae Johnson, who left practice on Monday due to some foot soreness, is day-to-day.
"Hopefully, he's back tomorrow," Shanahan said. "If not, I think it will be after our day off."
Cornerback Tim Harris will remain out for a couple of weeks after leaving Monday's practice with what Shanahan said was a groin injury. The shortage of cornerbacks opened up more opportunities for players like Ken Webster and rookie Deommodore Lenoir.
Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair left practice yesterday with an injury. However, the team received some good news. It won't be a long-term concern.

Also on a side field during practice was wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who worked with the strength and conditioning staff. (NBC Sports Bay Area)
"It's just soreness," Shanahan said. "We're trying to be smart with Deebo. Deebo came into this camp in as good of shape as I've ever seen him in. He hit this fifth or sixth practice, wherever we're at, pretty sore — groin tightness — so we just took care of him."

QB watch
After working with the second-team unit in previous practices, Trey Lance received his first rep behind the first-team offensive line. However, it only lasted one snap. On the next rep, with the twos, Lance threw a nice deep ball to wide receiver Trent Sherfield, who ran for an easy 65-yard touchdown. (The Athletic, The Athletic)

On Monday, Shanahan told reporters that there are no plans to get Lance work with the first-team unit, which obviously led to questions after today's practice.
"We have seven-day installs," Shanahan explained. "A certain play that went in today that we wanted all O-lines to get reps with, and we're only going to do that play with Trey."
Once again, Shanahan said after practice that the 49ers' plan at quarterback remains unchanged.
Garoppolo finished the day 8-of-12 passing in team drills, including a miss 40 yards downfield to wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who was covered by cornerback Jason Verrett. (Bay Area News Group)
Other notes
After being limited in previous practices, wide receiver Jalen Hurd participated in team drills for the first time. He spent the last two seasons on injured reserve and is coming off an ACL injury suffered a year ago. Hurd has yet to take a regular-season snap since the 49ers drafted him in 2019. (The Athletic)

Defensive end Anthony Zettel has had a solid training camp. Hutchinson reports that on one play during 1-on-1s, Zettel surprised offensive tackle Trent Williams with a spin move. Obviously, not much surprises the savvy veteran. Williams went over to speak with Zettel, and on the next rep, Williams "absolutely stonewalls him" and "almost pancaked Arden Key, too." (KNBR)
Defensive end Dee Ford looks fast, and on one rep, chased Lance out of bounds to the sideline. (The Athletic) While working with the second-team defense, Ford recorded at least one would-be sack against Garoppolo and a few pressures. (Sacramento Bee)
Ford appeared in just one game last season before being sidelined due to neck and back injuries.
Coaches and teammates spent the afternoon praising wide receiver Trent Sherfield's efforts in training camp.
"Trent's been very reliable," Garoppolo said after practice. "He really has. He's one of those guys -- we have so much offense in right now, so much of the playbook is installed. We've only got a couple more days of install, I think. Some guys will get lost in all of it, mentally. And he's been out there, sharp, every day. He's on his stuff, and as a quarterback, that's the main thing you can ask for from a receiver, for a guy to be on his stuff and in the spot you expect him to be."
Linebacker James Burgess picked off quarterback Josh Rosen during team drills. Aiyuk finished the day with six catches and one drop during team drills. Sherfield had five receptions, while Mohamed Sanu had three. Defensive lineman Kentavius Street had a couple of wins against guard Laken Tomlinson. Offensive linemen Mike McGlinchey and Colton McKivitz and defensive linemen D.J. Jones and Arik Armstead also impressed. Safety Jimmie Ward "was all over the place," displaying "sticky coverage," a would-be sack, and a near interception. (ESPN, ESPN, ESPN)
