49ers-Lions: QB Trey Lance's early participation wasn't planned but always remains an option

Trey Lance throwing the first touchdown of the regular season for the 49ers might not quite have been what they envisioned before the start of their 41-33 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday, but it turned out to be a good move nonetheless. Lance shuffled in and out of preseason games with starter Jimmy Garoppolo, so there was always a chance the 49ers could do something similar once the regular season started. It happened on their second offensive possession of the game when Lance was inserted deep in Lions territory for a running play, then once more to seal the drive with a five-yard touchdown pass to Trent Sherfield. It sounds like the decision to play Lance early on was a simple matter of in-game play calling rather than it being something that was planned in

The San Francisco 49ers escaped Ford Field with a 41-33 victory over the Detroit Lions in Week 1. The offense put up 442 total yards in the effort. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo completed 17 of his 25 attempts for 314 passing yards and a touchdown in his 2021 regular-season debut. That's a 68.0 completion percentage. The No. 3 overall draft pick, Trey Lance, completed 100 percent of his pass attempts. Of course, he only made one attempt. That attempt went to wide receiver Trent Sherfield for a five-yard touchdown, though. Lance was in the game for four snaps. Garoppolo had 51 snaps. It wasn't the quarterback rotation that most anticipated going into the game. The rookie was expected to see the field more, something the Lions undoubtedly prepared for. That didn't

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch joined KNBR's Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks show this afternoon. He was asked about the situation with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, which was probably blown out of proportion this week. Entering the season, expectations were high for the second-year wideout, who had an impressive rookie campaign. Aiyuk was seen as a potential number one receiver for the team. Instead, on Sunday, that turned out to be third-year receiver Deebo Samuel, who racked up an impressive 189 receiving yards and a touchdown on 9 catches. Aiyuk split time with Trent Sherfield and didn't see a single target in the game. It wasn't the sophomore debut most were expecting. As a result, some started to wonder if Aiyuk might be in the 49ers'
