49ers recount franchise-altering trade, and why Shanahan thinks Garoppolo may benefit

Mar 29, 2021 at 6:20 PM--

This was the best chance the 49ers were going to get. After perhaps the most brutal, unpredictable season that could have been conceived, San Francisco finished with a draft pick they thought and probably hoped, after drafting Nick Bosa, that they'd never again be in range for.

49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk feels he'll benefit from Mohamed Sanu's presence

Brandon Aiyuk expects to be even better than he was during his impressive rookie campaign when the San Francisco 49ers receiver hauled in 60 passes for 748 receiving yards and got into the end zone seven times (five through the air and two on the ground). Everyone has been impressed by the second-year receiver during the team's initial training camp practices, which has produced high fan expectations for Aiyuk, too. Aiyuk stepped up to the podium on Friday to speak with reporters. He was asked about his offseason focus. What did he work on over the last six months to better prepare him for a potential leap in 2021? "I would probably say just strength, filling out my body, more muscle, being able to endure the long season. Endurance, body strength, throughout my

Why Kyle Shanahan has 'high expectations' for the 49ers defense in 2021

Not only did the San Francisco 49ers have to navigate a pandemic in 2020, to the point of eventually calling Arizona, not the Bay Area, home, but the team endured one of the most injury-plagued campaigns we've witnessed in the last two decades. While no one is using that as an excuse, coaches and players know that a healthy 49ers roster can compete with anyone. That's why everyone is so excited about this year. Despite the team's struggles during last season's six-win campaign, head coach Kyle Shanahan expects big things from the 49ers defense in 2021. "I've got very high expectations for our defense," Shanahan told NFL Network's Steve Mariucci on Saturday. "I

Trey Lance may well find himself as the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers before the season's out, but he clearly won't be starting training camp that way based on what head coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday. The 49ers obviously plan on Lance eventually being the starter over incumbent Jimmy Garoppolo after trading up to select him with the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. But as of now, the job remains Garoppolo's to lose. "There's no open competition right now in terms of they're getting equal reps with the same group," Shanahan told reporters Tuesday, one day before the start of camp. "Jimmy's coming in as the one and Trey's coming in as the two." Lance

49ers' Kyle Shanahan explains how Jimmy Garoppolo impressed him during offseason work

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch spoke to the media Tuesday afternoon as the team kicks off training camp. The players reported for camp, with practices set to begin on Wednesday. During the media session, Shanahan had plenty to say about his team, and especially his quarterback. That is, his current starting quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo. It should come as no surprise, but the head coach referred to Garoppolo as "our best quarterback in the building right now." He emphasized that Garoppolo is the starter, and that there is no competition for starting quarterback job at this time. "Jimmy's coming in as
