There were multiple reports that the San Francisco 49ers were among those contending to acquire former New York Jets safety Jamal Adams. The most recent came from Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, who stated that both the 49ers and Dallas Cowboys were among the teams involved in trade discussions.

General manager John Lynch calls those reports inaccurate.

"Totally inaccurate," Lynch told NBC Sports Bay Area. "We did not ever make a call about the player."

The Jets ended up shipping the All-Pro safety to the division-rival Seattle Seahawks, where he will now face the 49ers at least twice a year.

Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area notes that the 49ers currently have $11.97 million in salary-cap room. The salary cap is expected to fall next season as a result of revenue losses from the expected absence of fans at games due to the pandemic. The team is also looking to lock up tight end George Kittle to a long-term deal.

There are several other key players scheduled to become free agents next year, including offensive tackle Trent Williams, cornerback Richard Sherman, and fullback Kyle Juszczyk. Trading for Adams could have complicated things.

The Jets made Adams the No. 6 overall selection in 2017 after playing college football at LSU. He registered 75 tackles, 6.5 sacks, seven passes defensed, an interception, a touchdown, and two forced fumbles through 14 games with New York in 2019.
