Turning to Najee Toran: 49ers likely to start undrafted rookie at guard

Sep 13, 2018 at 6:20 PM--

It's only the second week of the season, but the 49ers already are down to starting their third-string right guard. At least that's the likely scenario for Sunday's game against the visiting Lions after starter Mike Person (foot) and his backup, Joshua Garnett (toe), missed their second straight practice Thursday. If they can't play, head coach Kyle Shanahan said the 49ers will turn to Najee Toran, an undrafted rookie from UCLA who was elevated from the practice squad Monday. "I'm expecting (Toran) to be our guy here Sunday unless we can have a miraculous recovery by some of the other guys," Shanahan said on KNBR. Toran, an honorable-mention All-Pac 12 choice in 2017, made 13 of his 24 college starts last year.

General manager John Lynch had hoped Richburg would be ready for training camp and shared in April that the offensive lineman should be healthy for the start of the regular

Bill Barnwell of ESPN went team-by-team to project potential future Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees for each. How do you do that for a team like the New York Jets? Barnwell couldn't come up with anyone who had more than a 10 percent chance to one day earn Hall of Fame honors. For the San Francisco 49ers, the decision was pretty easy. The ESPN writer lists veteran cornerback Richard Sherman as "likely" to make the Hall of Fame, which means he has between a
