Last week, Kyle Shanahan was a guest on "The TK Show" with The Athletic's Tim Kawakami. He got the chance to discuss the San Francisco 49ers' offseason program, his thoughts on rookie Trey Lance, new defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans, and most intriguingly, passing on star quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson in the 2017 NFL Draft. "Anybody who had a chance to take Patrick Mahomes or Deshaun who didn't, I mean, everyone wishes we had a time machine," Shanahan said. "Before I came here, I had a very good idea that we would be able to get a free-agent quarterback the next year, one that I knew we could win with. Rookie Trey Lance has been getting practice reps since May 14, when the San Francisco 49ers kicked off their rookie minicamp. Organized team activities (OTAs), which included seven more practices, followed. Those were cut short following a couple of serious injuries to two potential key backups this week in Justin Skule and Tarvarius Moore. Now, Lance will have until July 27 to study what he has learned and prepare for training camp. The 49ers surrendered significant draft capital to trade up to select Lance at No. 3 overall. While viewed as raw, having only 17 games on his collegiate resume, his talent is undeniable. Kyle Shanahan fell in love with Lance's

One of the blink-and-you-missed-it comments from San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan yesterday involved an update on veteran pass rusher Dee Ford. The defender has not played since September 13, 2020, the week before the team lost Nick Bosa to a season-ending injury. While Ford dealt with neck and back injuries, there was always hope that he might return at some point during the season. That never happened, and Ford did not play another snap after his 46 on defense in Week 1. When Ford has been on the field, he has proven to be disruptive. However, the pass rusher has appeared in just 12 games since the 49ers traded for him in 2019. He was supposed to be one of the answers to San Francisco's pass-rushing woes. The team later drafted Bosa to complement
