Fangio was the top choice to serve as the defensive coordinator on Kyle Shanahan's yet-to-be assembled staff with the 49ers, but the Bears didn't allow Fangio out of his contract, a source said. Shanahan, of course, remains the Falcons offensive coordinator and can't be officially hired by the 49ers until Atlanta's season ends. Shanahan, 37, had identified Fangio as his top pick to serve as defensive coordinator. Fangio is a 31-year NFL veteran who has been a defensive coordinator for the past 17 seasons.
