In 2015, the 49ers reportedly wanted to make Joseph, then with the Bengals, their defensive coordinator and assistant head coach, but were blocked from speaking with him by Cincinnati. Joseph is in his first season as a defensive coordinator after spending the previous 10 years as a defensive backs coach with the Bengals (2014-15), Texans (2011-13) and 49ers. A cornerback who played two seasons for the Jets and Colts, he began his NFL coaching career as an assistant defensive backs coach with the 49ers in 2005.
