49ers place just-extended TE McDonald on IR

Dec 12, 2016 at 3:00 PM--

Three days after signing tight end Vance McDonald to a five-year contract extension, the 49ers placed him on injured reserve today because of a shoulder injury. ESPN reported his extension is worth $35 million with $16 million in guarantees, although the fine-print actual figures could reveal the deal isn't quite so lucrative. McDonald, who missed two games earlier this season with a hip injury, missed eight games in 2014 with a back injury that forced him to be placed on injured reserve. The 49ers initially announced Kilgore had a leg injury, although head coach Chip Kelly said he was told Kilgore had a knee injury.

Report: Patriots working on a new contract for 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo -- just in case

By David Bonilla

Better safe than sorry, right? Dale Arnold of NESN reports that the New England Patriots are working on a new contract for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Yes, Garoppolo is still with the San Francisco 49ers, and this news doesn't necessarily mean that a deal is imminent. If accurate, it just means that the Patriots are getting everything in order -- just in case a trade happens. It could also mean that the Patriots believe the 49ers are likely to seek a trade. What I've been told, by a reliable source —- @Patriots are working on a new

John Lynch on 49ers' draft secrecy: "We just wanted to see how far it could go"

It was maddening for San Francisco 49ers fans. It was maddening for all NFL fans and even much of the media. Social media has not been a fun place since the team traded up to the No. 3 overall pick on March 26. There was so much rampant speculation surrounding what the 49ers might do, and the team's brass was playing it close to the vest, refusing to offer any hints. There were reports that even those inside the building, like coaches and some front-office personnel, didn't even know which direction head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch were leaning. Even CEO Jed York joked on Thursday that he had no idea. That, of course, turned out to be a lie as York proceeded to further mess with the fanbase with some cryptic tweets. "We were in the bunker,"

Why didn't the 49ers draft a WR, TE, or DE? It just worked out that way

An ideal situation for any NFL team would be to come out of the NFL Draft having selected the best players on its board at their draft spots that also happened to be at positions of need, but things usually don't fall into place that easily. Such was the case in the 2021 NFL Draft for the San Francisco 49ers, who were able to fill multiple needs with their picks but also had a couple of moments where they came away with players at positions they weren't planning to address due to those players being the top prospects on their board. For anyone wondering why the 49ers didn't add some depth at areas where they could have used it, such as wide receiver, tight end, or EDGE, that's the reason. The 49ers made their selections based on how the draft played out, and as a

George Kittle: Jimmy Garoppolo's our quarterback, but I trust 49ers brain trust to improve team

With the start of the 2021 NFL Draft just a day away, San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle joined Good Morning Football this morning. He could have a new quarterback as a teammate by Thursday night. On March 26, the Niners traded a haul, including two future first-rounders, to move up to the No. 3 spot. While the team has stated that Jimmy Garoppolo remains in its plans for the upcoming season, there have been reports of growing buzz around the league that San Francisco could look to trade Garoppolo before or during the draft. In Kittle's mind, though, Garoppolo remains his guy. "I mean, Jimmy's our quarterback," Kittle said. "He has been. He's led us to a bunch of wins. We haven't won without him. His record speaks for itself. ...
